I would start by adding the iTunes on the MacBook to the iTunes on the iMac.
If there are duplicates it will take a while to remove them but iTunes has a
Show Duplicates option. Then see how much space is used on the iMac.
IMO 500 GB drives are the best value at the moment. You *can* go larger, but
I'd prefer to have 2 x 500 GB rather than 1 x 1 TB, for example. This allows
for a more resilient backup strategy.
