[applekeynote] Presenter screen hangs

Greetings

I've just returned home after giving a presentation. During the
presentation the presenter's view stopped working. The clocks were
stopped and the slides didn't change.

The actual slides were OK on the external display so I could keep
going and the audience was none the wiser.

Is this common?

I'm running KeyNote 4.0.2 on Leopard 10.5.2 with all updates applied
on a MacBook Air with the VGA adapter. I wasn't using a remote control
or anything fancy. Just the Air and Keynote. No other applications
were running. The presentation was very simple with no video. Just
text and images with some transitions and builds.

Thanks

[Apple iPod] Updating iTouch

I hooked up my iTouch to my notebook to sync some music. Got a message
telling me that Updates were available. So, I click ok and it took
about 1.5 hrs to download the upgrades and then ...it started to
upgrade my iTouch. Then...everything froze. The notebook as well as
the iTouch. So, I called the local Apple Store and was told I would
need to restore my iTouch. Grrr!! Any idea why this may have
occurred? Now ...I'm worried what will happen when I try that upgrade
again.

[Apple iPod] another part on transferring DVD to iPod

Thank you for all of your pointers on my previous dilemna. I have
tried to get Handbrake. It won't work with panther. I tried iSquint
and it's not wanting to accept the DVD information. It says that it
doesn't understand the file. It says if you want to accept it but I do
not know if it means that in-time, it will work. Is there a manual on
iSquint? Or if there is anyone out there, please walk me through with
the steps if they have successfuly did it.
Thanks

[Apple iPod] Frozen Nano - Help!!

My 2g Nano (old guy) is frozen _on_ at song #29 of 34
on a playlist. It shows 2.44 minutes played. The
wheel will not move. It won't turn off
or get anything else on the menu. I have no idea how
to reset it. I guess eventually the battery will die,
but it was just fully recharged yesterday.

Is it a lost cause? I have an 80g Classic but I use
the Nano when I ride my horse. I rode with it today
and it worked fine until I dismounted and tried to
turn it off. I have ridden with it for well over a
year.

About the only thing that could be done to make the ipod touch even
better would be to add voiceover (the mac os x screen reader). I love
the touches though I can't seem to raise enough cash to buy one (and
my 30gb ipod video just keeps getting older and worth less money. Oh
well.

[Apple iPod] iTouch - enthusiasm

My friend has one and she loves it. It's great for photo storage - and the resolution seems
quite sharp. She loves iTunes and looking at album covers. The WiFi feature works quite well.
We were lost on a trip to CT and we just pulled into a Mall parking lot and picked up a WiFi signal
and mapquested our way out. She likes being able to read Web pages and check Yahoo Mail and all that
other good stuff. Go to an Apple Store and play with one - you'll come away excited. When they
get the 64 gig version, I'll be first in line......

and if, for some reason, you don't like it you can just list it on eBay and get nearly what you paid for it!

Yes, I know all this, but the fact that it can play AVI's also means that there's the POTENTIAL to play the codecs (like dvix and xvid) that currently only work (or at least are most often seen) within the AVI (vs. MOV) container...

There is in all things a pattern that is part of our universe. It has
symmetry, elegance, and grace--those qualities you find always in
that which the true artist captures. You can find it in the turning
of the seasons, in the way sand trails along a ridge, in the branch
clusters of the creosote bush or the pattern of its leaves. We try
to copy these patterns in our lives and our society, seeking the
rhythms, the dances, the forms that comfort. Yet, it is possible to
see peril in the finding of ultimate perfection. It is clear that
the ultimate pattern contains its own fixity. In such perfection,
all things move towards death

Re: [Apple iPod] iPod Touch

I ordered my 16 gig Touch the instant I could get into the online
store the day Steve made the announcement. I have never regretted the
purchase. Yes, I have all my photos on it and they look beautiful. I
also enjoy watching television shows I've purchased from the iTunes
Store on my lunch break. I don't really use mine for mail, stocks or
maps, though I did purchase the apps in January.

Battery life is shorter than my other iPods, especially if I leave
WiFi on. Go for the 32 gig and have fun!

RE: [Apple iPod] iPod Touch

Wow, that's great to know about the third-party video player. I wonder if it will play Dvix and Xvid video? That has been one of my biggest complaints about the iPod - that you are stuck to just the formats Apple wants you to have, whereas most other players out there can boast of a zillion different format options. If the more open application environment of the Touch (and iPhone) removes that limitation, I might have to seriously think about an iTouch. If they can get the thing up to 64GB without making it even more pricey, that might be the thing that pushes me to buy....

Jules,

Like you I¹m was looking into the Touch and was expecting it to replace my
80GB Archos. My son is visiting us right now and he brought with him his
16gb iPod Touch. For me this was perfect because I could spend
considerable time exploring it.

After a day of playing with it, I have determined it if far superior to my
30gb iPod (very old version). I¹m not convinced the video player is better.
In fact, I think the video player (and photo viewer) is considerably worse
than the Archos. I have decided to keep my Archos until I find something
better, but the touch is not it.

On the good side, one of my concerns was that the Touch required you to
convert all the video files to the iPod format. That IS NOT TRUE. My son
added a 3rd party player (from memory it is Visual Hub) and it plays AVI
files just fine, without conversion.

Good luck in your search..

RE: [Apple iPod] iPod Touch

Jules, you might want to look around. There are more devices out there than just the iPod touch and the Archos! I don't have the touch, but have seen it and it does have nice display features for photos, but I haven't compared the display against competing devices. Perhaps someone online has. What was "rubbish" about the Archos? Was it the user interface, the display, or something else? Also, if your wife is just going to use it for images, the 32GB model might be overkill. I'm not sure about the touch, but on my regular iPod, it converts all images you have down to a 100k, so a 32gb model would be able to store 320,000 of these. Does she really need that much capacity, or will she be using it for music, audio books, and/or video as well? As Otto mentioned, the touch is flash-based, so comparatively the memory is expensive. The other devices out there should be cheaper and hold more, and they also won't force you to convert all your images in order to put them on the device. But they will be bigger...

Re: [Apple iPod] iPod Touch

I don't own one, so this is just from what I've read.

The Touch is much more expensive per GB because it uses flash memory. You
know that already of course.

You cannot (yet?) use Disk Mode on the Touch. It means that you can only
load files onto it using iTunes. I can't quite believe that a device that
looks like the ideal pocket file viewer is restricted in this way.

How about importing your MP4 into iMovie, then sending it
over to iDVD to do the burns?

[Apple iPod] Adding Video Flies Into iTunes.

Thanks to a lot of help from many very patient people in the group I
have now succesfully added all of my MP3 music files into the "Music"
folder in the iTunes library.

Now I'm afraid that I'm back again!! asking for help to do the same
with my VIDEO files.

These files are either music videos or short dance demos and have all
been converted to MP4 files.

Do all of these files have to be "tagged" just like the MP3's? i.e.
via "Get Info"? If so, how much info to enter?

Which folder do they go into in the Library - Music or Video?

Many thanks for your patience, really appreciate your help.

Brian

[Apple iPod] Re: photo's

Haven't use a PC in years but this is how it's done on a Mac.

Make sure that you can put Photos on your iPod.

Open iTunes and plug in the iPod. Click on the iPod in iTunes and a window comes up.
Find Photos and click on it.

You must have a folder of your jpeg files ready to access on your computer in a folder.
My Folder is called iPod Photos.

Sync from that folder all of the photos in that folder. Include full res photos.

Look for sync on the lower left and click Sync.

[Apple iPod] Converting mp4/mv4 files to DVD (mpg) Formet

Can anyone recommend any (conversion type) programs which will QUICKLY
convert mp4/mv4 video files to a (recordable) format I can use in a
DVD player?

I tried a "trial" version of a program called SuperAVConverter but it
took forever (at 13-hours it had only "converted" about 39% of an
800MB mp4 movie) and then it "crashed" before completion.

I don't think that the DVD2iPod programs offer the reverse conversion
function; but perhaps they do.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

If you want to put dvd's on an ipod, you'll need to look for a program
called iSquint. Check to make sure it'll run on Panther (I'm pretty
sure it will). You convert the dvd into a movie then you can add it
to iTunes just like you do with music.

Download a program called "Handbrake". It's free and you can find
it easily with a Google search.
It will convert your DVD movie to a file that you can put in
Itunes and then sync your Ipod. It's very easy to use (I left all
settings in their default mode) but be aware; it will take 3 hours or
more to convert just one movie. I start mine before I go to bed.

I'm just about sold on buying an iPod, in fact I'm thinking about
buying two--a Classic and a Shuffle. But can the same iTunes program on
the same computer deal with two independent units?

I think the more interesting challenge is to eschew the entire idea of "lines" altogether.

Awhile ago I was informing someone that most of what you can do with bullets can likely
be done better with a table. The presentation was about amusement machines an they
were comparing a "spider" to an "octopus" using two bulleted lists. I was able to divine
the real meaning of each of the items (to use for the table headers) and turned a boring
texty slide to one that drove home the main points effectively AND was more visually
pleasing.

[Apple iPod] The Apple Store

I just wanted to share my experience at the Apple Store with this
group. I did not realize they did training in the store, but the
other day while on line, I found that I could register for the iPOd
and iTunes one hour workshop.

While this group has been great at answering questions, the workshop
at the Apple Store was great for telling me what I did not know. This
is my third iPod over many years and the tech at the store was able to
show me things I could do with the iPod and my iTunes.

Of course they aroused my curiousity to purchase a new touch, but that
will have to wait.

I recommend to anyone, if you live near an Apple store, go to iPod and
iTunes training at least once.
Hank

Re: [applekeynote] Question for Les: Abandon 6 x 6 rule?

Don et al,

If you watch the Macworld presentation, I address the 6 x 6 rule, and it's big brother, the 7 x7 rule, and basically point out, in rather dramatic fashion, where these rules came from.

To some extent, they are a hangover from overhead projector days, which powerpoint (or originally, Forethought) was designed on the Mac to support via black and white transparencies for laserwriters.

You may now officially abandon these rules. The Emperor indeed has no clothes.

So my question to you is, considering this post-PP world, should the "6 x 6 rule" be

Re: [Apple iPod] can iTunes deal with multiple units?

My spouse and I made up different libraries on our laptop because of this issue. We
accidentally hooked his iPod up to my library one day. Then, iTunes wanted to know
what to do since it was not connected to the "proper" library. It works for us.

Yes. The same iTunes can deal with any number (there must a limit but I've
never heard what it is) of iPods, each with its own prefs and playlists (or
the same ones if you like!).

[applekeynote] Flowed text in Keynote

I just uploaded another tutorial presentation to the Files area. It goes along with a tip I
posted awhile back.

http://www.keynoteuser.com/news/?p=180

I needed a pointer, so I created one using shapes. The inner and outer shapes are grouped,
but are separate shapes. So, you can use them together in the classic way, or separate them,
change colors, etc.

Re: [Apple iPod] Using the ipod via drag and dropping folders on to it.

I think I remember it available in my own use of
window 3x a bit later than you say you started
with Macs. I was using but did not personally own
a computer until the late 80's and then it was
used equipment. The first IBM clone I could
afford (and that was a joke, I couldn't afford it
very easily) was in 1991.

Re: [Apple iPod] Using the ipod via drag and dropping folders on to it.

I've given in to it.

Computer users like drag/drop but it isn't going
to work with an iPod. So I gave up the real
estate and let iTunes/QuickTime reside on my
computers (both MacBook and Dell Vista).

Do you have family or friends that could show you
how their iTunes and iPod work? Sometimes seeing
it hands-on takes away the scariness of the
program.

The problem, as we often see in this forum, is that many people seem to
"overthink" it.

iTunes was designed to manage music and to provide an interface with the
iPod. It does this very well indeed and far more quickly than anyone could
do it manually.
