[applekeynote] Applescript and Keynote

I have written a script that makes all my Keynote windows invisible
when a certain condition is satisfied, and then displays a dialogue
asking if I want to make them visible again. If I say "Yes" then it
does so.

The relevant parts say:

tell application "Keynote"
if application "Keynote" is not playing then -- "playing" means
running a slide show
set KeynoteVisible to visible of front window is true
tell every window to set visible to false
end if
end tell

and

tell application "Keynote" to tell every window to set visible to true

This works as intended, EXCEPT that when they becomes visible again a
small (about 100 x 100 pixels) unwanted window appears that sits
over any open window (whether Keynote or not). It clearly belongs to
Keynote because it activates Keynote if I click inside it. Two
thirds of it are transparent black and it has what looks like a text
box, and a Button labelled "Button". I can drag it around the screen,
but that's the ONLY thing I can do. There seems to be no way to close
it (other than quitting Keynote), it's not listed in Keynote's Window
menu, and there is nothing that corresponds to it in the View menu. I
can't write text in the text box, and clicking on Button does nothing.

Any suggestions as to what is going on?

Re: [applekeynote] New Macbooks

Every now and then when I'm in an Apple store, I do a spotlight search
on their computers for .key files to see how Apple's showing off the
latest version. I can't remember the name of the file or it's
location, but I'll see if I can get that next time I go.

RE: [applekeynote] New Macbooks

I recently spent some time playing with some of the updated features (such as the motion) and have since embarked on a much more "captive" presentation because of the outstanding features..   This definitely pulls WAY ahead of anything else available.

There's also a newish (not sure how new) sample presentation in the
store that uses some of the newer features of Keynote. It's around 60
megs... uses the motion tools. I tried it on both an old and new and
everything was there. If they update the Mini with the new chipset,
I'd daresay that'd be a new standard in presentation giving :)

I'm still waiting for the day when you can do "shimmer" on a full

Re: [applekeynote] Birds of a Feather at Macworld 2009

Congrats, Brian!

I think Apple's getting closer to having iWork in sync with the whole
OS and the rest of their apps. For a long time, iWork's either been a
half-step ahead, or a half-step behind where the OS is. Keynote
specifically still lacks features of Numbers and Pages! I wouldn't see
it as a slight, but more as a validation of what you and the other
theme producers and disseminators of Keynote information have been
working hard for. So you all can have a round of applause for making
this interest in a BOF happen!

December, eh? Half the gifts for the birthday and half for Christmas! ;)

Re: [applekeynote] Birds of a Feather at Macworld 2009

Great news, Les!

I do think it's a good idea to run with. I've noticed with some
interest that in my informal visits of Apple Stores that I've seen
more people getting One to One's with Keynote (saw one guy picking up
everything KeynoteThemePark sells there!) I'm convinced that there's
finally a pretty good number of active Keynote users that use it for a
variety of tasks... motion graphics, lightweight photoshop
replacement, etc. I think it'd be a good mixture across the creative
spectrum.

Brian – if the BoF goes ahead, we will think of you and pause.. Better still, send baby pics – yeah, use a Keynote file.

Oh, and send some KN materials I can use to promote your work.

Re #1: I was surprised as any in 2008 to get the gig, but it made me determined to do a “good enough” job to get a return gig. I guess I went above and beyond the call of duty cos they asked me to do the Powertools... I has applied just to do a repeat of my 75” workshop updated hopefully with iWork 09 and more neuroscience (oh, and Nancy Duarte’s new book as prizes).

Best

I advise clients to take a screen shot of their first slide (usually denoting subject title and presenter name) and use that as the secondary screen desktop. Or if they are going to break out of Kn into another app like Photoshop, get it ready on the secondary screen. Downside – the menu stays on the main screen, so sometimes it’s better to go into mirror mode and be be done with it.

Def a failure of KN not to be able to use a key combo to bring thumbnails of the entire show to the presenter screen.

You can also use the - and = keys to bring up a mini slide navigator,
but it's no where near as large or flexible as PPT's (bummer). you can
then at least keep hitting the = to move forward through the
thumbnails, or type a number and hit return to trigger a certain
slide. I used to use a Griffin PowerMate to scroll through slides,
then I set it so I had to push and hold a bit before triggering the
selection. Pushing quickly was set to advance one build. It worked
pretty well actually :)

Can KN do something like this?

Posted by: "Don Kraig" don@dmkraig.net   dmkraig

Wed Oct 22, 2008 10:31 pm (PDT)

I apologize if this has already been asked and answered.

I have a friend who has some very, very long PP presentations. He has fallen in love with KN,
and is converting them all over.

But there is one thing he really misses. In PP, when in presentation mode, you can get a long
set of thumbnails, can scroll up or down, and from that select any slide. He says he can find
any way to do this in KN. If you're on slide 63 and need to find a slide around 200, but you
don't have 350 images memorized by number, you can't easily visually find the right slide
within presentation mode.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

TIA

You could just hit the = key to get to visual aid of what each slide looks like and scroll from there.  It only shows 3 slides at a time, but it sounds like what you're looking for.

Hope that helps.

Re: [applekeynote] Can KN do something like this?

Don,

Apart from hitting the Escape button and going into KN “manually”, hopefully keeping hidden KN’s guts from public viewing (cos you’re in Presenter Mode and you have a nice relevant desktop image displaying on the projector), what you can do is print out the slides, packing as many as you can on the sheets of paper, and making sure they’re numbered for quick reference.

Also note that you can tell your printer how many pages to print per individual sheet so for example, 6 pages can be compressed onto just one (wiuth rather small thumbnails). On one example I used, I saw a max of 6 slides per page.

Keep them near the Mac for quick reference. The Command- number key will only show you three preview slides in Presenter Mode.
One day, an iPhone used as a remote will show all the slides in thumbnail view.

Re: [applekeynote] Recovering a damaged .key file

Oh-oh, that file's missing.
I'm looking at the package of a different document, and I see where it's supposed to be, but it's missing in the damaged document.

Now I know why it's damaged -- but don't have a clue why that index file decided to leave me. It never even suggested to me that it was unhappy. ;(

So I don't know how it got damaged ... but now I'm facing rebuilding

And I see a bunch of screenshots in the Thumbs folder, so that'll
help. What I'm having trouble finding is a file that contained all

Has anyone else had to deal with this? Does anyone have a trick that
they can share?

Re: [applekeynote] Re: Coping with badly maintained projectors

All good advice. My presentations are heavy on photographs, and if the color is off on the projector, it's a real problem.

I know of a number of professional speakers who publish their requirements on their web sites and are very specific about their requirements. We don't all have that luxury though. Here is an example.

And another:

Once, the "speaker cabinet" was a speaker mounted to a cardboard box.

Unless I am absolutely positive that a venue will have the proper electronics, I always carry
my own computer to run KN. I have my own wireless lapel microphone. And i bring my
own projector. If it's local, I bring my own sound system and if it's distant I check to see if
a sound system is rentable.

My projector is a Sharp Notevision SR-1X. It's about 4.5" deep by 9.5" wide by 2.5" tall. I'm
not trying to promote this unit, but I am pointing out that there are good quality
projectors that are relatively small. This unit is far from perfect. For example, it doesn't
have a zoom lens. The solution: I carry a 25' cable to attach it to my Mac.

I follow the motto of the Boy Scouts: Be Prepared!
