[Apple iPod] Brand new to iPod Group AND to iPods!

Greetings all,
I am new to the group and to the iPod-I've never owned one, and have difficulty
asceertaining the right model and subsequently its worth. If you can assist, I would
appreciate it. Here goes:

I am considering purchasing a used iPod (my very first one, so I know
very little about them from a model-to-model comparison/perspective).
A student is offering to sell me theirs. Here's what I know:

* It's either a 5th gen. model or a "Photo" model, 30-gig HD, white, photo-
capable for sure as I saw entries in the menu. Single click whell, color screen, silver (or
chrome) back (has an HP logo lasered on the back along with the Apple logo), stereo mini
plug and some sort of mini-DIN socket, which I think is for camera connection.
* condition appears good, though to me there is exceptional scuffing,
enough on the screen to make you notice it. And plenty on the back
* I was able to recharge it, in part via FireWire/USB and mostly via wall adapter (also white)
* It comes with two cables, one USB to mini-HD20 (the iPod socket end)
and one FireWire to HD20, both white
It also comes with a wall-wort style recharger (the FW cable plugs
into it), and the original install CD (do I need that?)
* it's missing the earbuds, and (if it was supposed to come with it
OEM) some sort of mini-video to composite adapter, again I presume to plug into a TV or
video-recording device

Asking price is $100 - is this good? Anything and/or any way to test
the device for integrity and condition? If purchased, does one
reformat the HD to clear out the old and prep for the new?

Thank you for any sage advice you can throw my way-my apologies for
the long read.
Best regards,
DLC

[Apple iPod] 1.0.3...

Why did my 1.0.3 update on my Classic optomize all my photos?

Why did I get a "can't find drive G:" error? [I don't have a drive G:!]

Where do we go to find out exactly what is being updated on new
releases?

thanx!

[Apple iPod] Confused about operating my new Ipod

I had an Ipod Nano 8 GB 2nd. generation model but it died.

However I had songs on it as well as Podcasts. Somehow some of the the Podcasts ended
up mixed in the music lists on the Ipod itself.

When I would open the Ipod page in Itunes (current version) on my computer everything
appeared to be in it's respective folder and not mixed together so I was never able to
figure out how to correct the problem.

I just got the new Ipod Nano 8 GB and of the 500 or so songs that I should have on it I see
only about a dozen on the Ipod. I am confused about this.

My computer is a 2.16 GHz. Intel Duo running OSX 10.4.11. AND iTunes 7.5.

I have a folder in my User Folder called "ITunes" which has within it:

A folder called "Album Artwork"
A file called "iTunes Library"
A folder called "iTunes Music" (which hold my 500 songs and I don't see any Podcasts)
Itunes Music Library xml

There is another folder in my User Folder called "Music" which has 2 folders within it
called:

Podcasts -which does contain all my Podcasts

The other folder is called "iTunes" and contains:

A folder called "Album Artwork"
A file called "iTunes Library"
A folder called "iTunes Music" which has no songs but only my Podcasts
A folder called "Previous iTunes Libraries" containing a file called "iTunes Library"
A folder called iPod Games containing 2 folders which are both empty.

WHEW!

I suspect that when I transferred my data from my old G4, something got screwed up. I
think just re-arranging these folders and discarding some files would do the trick but I'm
not sure how to go about this.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sy

There's a good possibility they're being filed also under Videos>Video
Podcasts on the iPod itself as well as being under podcasts, and no,
if played from there will not show video.

Hope that helps

[applekeynote] Beware of the SFWordProcessing bug

Well I got hit by the 'SFWordProcessing causing Keynote presentations to crash' bug today.

The thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5911318
notes that some text transitions in slides using some fonts (especially Helvetica, and
especially italic and or bold apparently) makes some individual slides crash Keynote.

This appears only to happen with Keynote 4.0.1 in Leopard 10.5.1. It was fine with Keynote
4.0.1 and Tiger.

So if you have some Tiger/Keynote 08 presentations, and are thinking of moving to Leopard,
I'm just flagging this up, so you don't fall into my experience.

(I had to do 2 presentations today - a large one to 70 children this morning - mainly photos -
and it was fine; then a very small presentation to 3 people in the afternoon, which would not
go past slide 5, and Keynote/the Mac just embarrassingly failed...)

with podcasts. I get several of them that have video that plays in
iTunes, but I get no video on the iPod when I sync it and play the
podcast on my iPod. Why?

Do you have an iPod that plays videos? You don't say what iPod you have.

If you have one that plays videos you have to go to "Videos" - "Video Podcasts" on your iPod to see the videos. You cannot play video podcasts from the podcast menu or you won't see the video.

Re: [Apple iPod] Disappearing tracks?

oh yes and often!!!! i am constantly losing 3 to 5 songs out of an
album, whole albums or just songs. backups are king. there is a direct
relationship between the size of your library and the amount of songs
itunes will lose. the larger the library the more it loses. no fix but
a backup or torrents that i know of.

[Apple iPod] Disappearing tracks?

What does it mean when tracks disappear? I now have a few exclamation
marks on the right side of my iTunes. The tracks are still on my iPod,
but obviously I get the "can't sync" message. The dont' even exist my
hard drive any more?

I realize that if it isn't on the drive, iTunes can't find it.... has
anyone heard of iTunes removing tracks?

Grabbing at straws... trying to figure out why stuff is going away.

All thoughts appreciated....

thanks....

[Apple iPod] iTunes Store

I click to open the iTunes website and right away the "store" opens.
Any way to stop this? I can't find anything in "preferences" to put an
end to it. It's not always been like this. Now that eMusic
automatically jumps to iTunes when a tune is downloaded, it does get
cumbersome. Thanks in advance.

Export as QuickTime and use VisualHub or similar to convert to Windows Media. Tried and tested :)

Most PCs have QT. The ones that don't can download a free version from apple.com.

[applekeynote] Keynote problem and suggestions (if there's a solution)

I've used Keynote for several years now and love it.

What I hate is that viewing your creation needsto be in done in real
time - if for example you want to build a presntation with a slide &
sound sequence you need to create it all on one slide as the sound
wont 'span' several slides. (Correct?)

Specialist software such as Soundslides allows real time tweaking and
consequently is rely fast to work with. Kenote apparently cant do
this. Or am I missing something?

Anyway - problem - I created a presentation last week and spent
several days getting it just right. It was complex, with many slides,
layers of build up in individual slides, and sound/slide sequences. I
choreographed the sound so that the images and sound perfectly matched
- many actions had specific sounds.

I did this on my desktop and then transferred the finished work to my
laptop and was hacked off to discover the sound timing had 'wandered'
all over the place.

I redid it, saved the result and when I opened it I discovered it had
done it again. I went back to the desktop and found a similar situation.

Anyone got any idea whats going on?

[Apple iPod] Drop outs

I have a first generation iPod Nano, and it has been working just fine until recently when one
of my recording developed a couple of brief drop outs when I transferred the music from the
computer to the iPod. The recording in my computer and on the original CD is fine, but it is
only a problem on the iPod and will not go away despite several efforts at rerecording. Is this
a defect on the Nano's drive?

[Apple iPod] Remove a music folder in iTunes

Hi All,

I have a new iPod and can't figure out how to remove a folder in
iTunes. Initially I went to add foler so I could add some music to my
iPod but now I want that folder to be removed as I am moving the music
I want on my ipod to another folder. The problem is that I am getting
duplicates because it is picking up the music from the old folder I
added. How do I remove a folder so iTunes doesn't watch it anymore?

Re: [Apple iPod] iTunes updates and peripheral devices

This is really a Mac/drive problem rather than an iPod/iTunes problem but
have you tried the obvious: disconnect, shut down, restart, reconnect the
drive? Have you tried both USB and Firewire connections?

DVDs can only hold up to 4.4 GB, or 8.5 on double layer. Is that enough for
your iTunes?

You have copied to DVD on the Mac and yet the Mac can't read the DVD? The PC
can?

There are two "critical" files in iTunes which contain all of the
current information about your iPod. They are:

iTunes Library.itl
iTunes Music Library.xml

They are located (on a Windows XP computer) in the following directory
on your "core" drive which contains your Windows operating system (on
my PC notebook it is "C" drive):
C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Music\iTunes

If you copy these two files, say to an USB "stick", from your "old"
computer, then copy them over the same files in your "new" computer
where you have already loaded iTunes (but not run it yet with your
iPod connected). These two files will "tell" iTunes program when you
run it with the iPod connected that all your songs, videos, etc. are
where they are supposed to be.

I have done this on two different notebooks I use, making sure the
latest files are in place on a particular computer (use the dates of
the files to tell you the latest) I'm syncing my iPod to, with no
problems of having any files on my iPod Video go astray.

[Apple iPod] iTunes updates and peripheral devices

I was hoping that this most recent iTunes update (7.5)
would correct the problem that I experienced with the
one before that (7.4.2?).

I have an eMac with OS 10.3.9 and an external hard
disk (USB) that was working just fine until the past
two software updates. Now my computer won't recognize
the hard disk and it says that OS X can't handle the
volume! (I'm assuming initialization might be a
problem here.)

I went to the Apple store today here in Japan and they
of course did not get the same error on their computer
but I think their computers would still not read the
disk. (I could be wrong. They don't always like to
tell me the details. I just know that they did not get
the same error that I did and so therefore say that my
error is unsupported by results.) They then said
(almost as a reflex!) that I should bring in my
computer to get it checked out and fixed. Huh? This
was after about 30 seconds.

Further discussion led to another guy chipping his two
yen in and saying that the hard disk was probably
faulty. I protested that it was fine until two updates
ago. he said that was probably just a coincidence with
the timing.

Does anybody know of anybody else with the same kind
of experience recently? Will rebooting be the
solution? Is the best solution just to get a new
external hard disk? Or, two? (I backed everything up
to DVD but the eMac doesn't read them. The PC does
though, so I still have t he data. The staff just
laughed when I said I backed up to DVD by the way. AT
least I backed things up!)

RE: [Apple iPod] Flight Damage

You shouldn't have any issues. When you get to security, they will have you
put everything into bins, I've never had to take mine out of my carry on,
they will run it through the x-ray machine along with your shoes and
everything else they can take off of you (more or less.) As all of your
belongings go through the x-ray, you will go through the metal detector, and
if necessary, get wanded, so your iPod will be safe from that. High altitude
will not affect it. (I have heard of some TSA employees that really beat
some of the iPods up, but I've not had a problem with that.)
Good luck!

Is there any damage that will or could occur to my 5th Generation

Anything else?

I fly 3 to 5 times a week, and have for 3+ years. Your iPod will be fine.
The x-rays won't affect the hard drive. My iPod, computer, external drives,
and thumb drives go through the X-ray just as often and I've had no
problems. X-rays can fog film, so if you are taking a 35mm camera be
careful.

Altitude has more to do with pressure than actual distance. Even when you
are flying at 36,000 ft, the cabin of the plane is pressured to about 5 to
6,000 ft. According to Apple, the iPod is good to 10,000 ft, but that
really means it's good down to the pressure (or lack of pressure) the drive
will encounter at 10,000. In a pressurized airplane, you and your iPod will
be fine, regardless of how high the plane really is.

Subject: [Apple iPod] Flight Damage

Hi Everyone and Happy Thanksgiving!

I haven't flown on a commercial airline since 1996 (pre Sept. 11th)
I am flying to New Orleans this coming Monday and I was
wondering .........

Is there any damage that will or could occur to my 5th Generation
Video ipod? from the Metal Detector? High Altitude? The "Wand" that
Security waves over your body?
Anything else?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Apple iPod] Naming albums

The trick is to search and/or sort so that you can select and edit the
largest number at a time, then narrow down to the individual ones as
required.

If the Nano is on manual then nothing will go on it that you don't want to.
You don't have to uncheck anything.

[Apple iPod] trasnferring files from one PC to another

Just bought a new PC and I need to move my iTunes files over to it in
such a way that my iPod will recognize it; I am hoping to do it so
that it is transparent to the iPod.

Does anyone know the best way to accomplish this task? thanks.

[applekeynote] Re: Dim Builds help, please

Thanks for your help.

That did it.

If you can make a request to Apple, the "by highlighted bullet" should always be available
for bulleted lists, even in a regular text box.

Thanks again!

It's there, but I believe it only works with the "body" box and not
just any text box that you've turned on bullets for.

[applekeynote] Dim Builds help, please

In the previous version of KN, when doing builds (of bulleted lists, for example), you could
dim previous bullets so only the current one would be accented. Is it my imagination, or has
this feature been eliminated in KN 4? It used to be available in the build-in menu. Now I
can't find it at all.

Can someone help me with what I'm missing?

Thanks!

Re: [Apple iPod] Naming albums

Thanks Otto, that worked great. I guess I have to do
this 34 times then create a playlist that has all of
them., but that's allright. Each CD lasts about 1 hr
and I've just done one which is putting me to sleep
trying to do it.

An other question. I don't want these on my Nano. I
have the Nano set on Manual and the Classic on Sync.
This means they will go on the Classic, but not the
Nano, right? Do I uncheck them when I sync the Nano?

It's got a one-year guarantee. Take it back to where you bought it, or
check on Apple's website for info about getting it serviced.

[Apple iPod] My Ipod don't turn on, the screen always appear turned off

Hi,

I have a serious problem with my Ipod Video, it won't turn on.

The screen is always black, it' always off even if I plug it into my
computer, the screen won't appear and show.

Someone know what can I do? I has been less than a year that I have it.

Can I send it directly to Apple for them to take a look at it or to a
company to repair it? Which company could repair this? Any ideas?

Regards,

SimonJPA
