[Apple iPod] Re: Charging up.

From longlast-battery.com -

Don't charge through a USB port because the port may not be putting
out enough juice fast enough to properly charge the battery even
though the iPod's battery indicator says it is fully charged. Your
computer can only charge if it is on and not in the sleep mode, so for
best result connect directly to a wall adapter/charge. Here is a
support articles from Apple about this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60941

For best results, try not to use computer ports to charge your iPod.
USB is especially sensitive to how many devices are on it and what the
resulting bus voltage is. It may even display the charging icon but
not be adding much to the battery. USB versions prior to 2.0 will not
charge your iPod (and probably be too slow for its other functions).
Even USB 2.0 is limited to 700 milliamps and the iPod "like" to see
one full amp for charging, plus some to spin the HD in the iPod while
mounted. Some (early) iPod models will not charge from USB, period.
Some PCs use 4-pin Firewire cables (all Macs are 6-pin) which carry no
charging voltage, so they won't work at all for recharging and can
allow your iPod to run down and cause serious problems while updating
firmware, restoring, or loading songs. Both USB and Firewire require
the iPod to be mounted by your computer as an external drive, which
means the iPod's HD is spinning, using some of the juice that the
battery might like to have. And if the computer sleeps or is turned
off, the battery won't charge either device and in some cases will
actually drain through the port circuits. Bottom line: if your ports
are not doing a good job of charging your battery, use the wall
adapter to charge for several cycles before questioning the battery's
credentials. If you have a new iPod which only comes with USB, don't
panic; it can work fine. But if you do experience problems, either
take everything else off the USB bus (except mouse & keyboard) and/or
get an AC adapter. Also note that earlier Firewire chargers can be
safely used to charge new USB-only iPods. You'll need a special cable,
however (about $10).

Another possibility to consider is the battery meter is inaccurate,
depending upon the model you have. Your iPod battery is probably
fine, fully charged, and ready to play for many hours. The battery
meter is really only useful for one thing -- it is an approximate
reminder of when to recharge (its just guessing). As an example, 1st
generation iPod has run for more than two hours with the meter showing
empty. And a 3rd gen ipod always shows very low charge on the meter
right after charging, but after using it for a while (sometimes as
long as 20 minutes) it fills in the black bar and reads more like
what's really in the battery. 5th Gen models have more of an accurate
meter.
Here is a support articles from Apple about this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61475

There is also a problem about draining by itself over night. This
happens to some iPods because they actually turn on by itself, and if
it's on shuffle or repeat, will play until the battery dies. To test
for this, simply turn up the volume all the way, plug in external
speakers, and shut it off. You'll find out pretty fast if it turns on
by itself…

To read more about resetting your meter, about charge cycles, etc,

Re: [Apple iPod] I - Tunes Plus

They no longer cost more at all. iTunes Plus tracks are (in the U.S.
store) .99, just like the non-plus.

I believe you are linking to a different product. I assume Yvonne is

[Apple iPod] Re: Transfering movies from a DVD to my iPod

Sorry Yvonne, I'm looking for freeware. I already was taken by
Imtoo, and due to the weakness of the net, how do we know that you
aren't from Any DVD trying to sell your product? I ain't biting,
since your post directly contradicts User Satisfication about Any DVD
iPod Converter on CNET (I don't make claims without backing it up).

http://www.cnet.com/topic-software/apple-ipod/dvd.html

Thus, I'm taking your advice like a grain of salt and continue to
sift through the mud until I find something that works.

Henry, you might find that using the keyboard port might not have
enough power to charge the unit.
Might have to use one on the computer itself, or use a USB hub
connected to the computer.

Re: [Apple iPod] Moving iTunes library from one external drive to another

I tried these instructions and after I moved my iTunes folder to the
recycle bin and closed iTunes, when I opened it back up it was empty.
Nothing in there. Help! I'm copying the music back from my external
to my hard drive, but I want it to go to my external. My preferences
are pointing there, but like I said, iTunes looks like I just installed
it with nothing in it.

Re: [Apple iPod] Transfering movies from a DVD to my iPod

UPDATE for Vista users!

When I used DVD Decrypter, then Handbrake on Disney's "Mary Poppins"
my 2 year old daughter was content with the outcome. I did notice a
slight video glitch for time to time about every 5 to 10 minutes at
most, so it ain't perfect on the newer releases. The glitch is
usually a multi-colored line across the screen for a couple of
seconds, but it really varies.

I just tried to decrypt Aristocats, one of Disney's latest release,
and apparently, Disney has countered Decrypter, so that a Failure
message pops up within seconds of decrytion. Aborting is the only
option, then. Bastards! If anyone knows of a freeware alternative
for Vista, please share!

[Apple iPod] Podcast must have changed somehow...

Well, I spoke too soon...

I synced my video nano to the "Crackle: Penn says" podcast and it
removed it from iPod. It was on there, and it removed it. I changed
none of the settings and I just sync'd it to pick up the new episides
of the podcast. What's up with that??

[Apple iPod] Podcast shows as good but it isn't in iPod

I have a strange problem...

I have a 60gig iPod. It is loaded with movies, podcasts, music, etc.
I subscribed to a new podcast called "Crackle: Penn says" on iTunes.
I downloaded all the episodes and added it to the sync screen so that
the next time I sync'd the iPod, it would load. Try as I may, it will
not go onto the iPod.

I have the latest firmware for the iPod, 1.3 and the latest verson of
iTunes.

I have taken all the other podcasts off and just try to load that
one, nothing.

I have looked in all other parts of the iPod thinking it may be
misclassified, nothing.

I have a lot of room on the iPod to load it, and I get no error
message saying that I can't load it for some reason.

I have another iPod, one of the new 8gig video models (I don't know
the name, but it is new) and that podcast loads to that one just
fine.

Sometimes, I have had music or movies not load becasue the name was
too long or there was some special character in the name. I can't
seem to change the name of the podcast.

Anyone have a solution to this one???

Thanks
Tim

Hmmm.. Maybe it's just my machine or lack of Ram or something. It
would take iTunes like 12 hrs to convert the movie to ipod and then it
didn't play right. But when I went back and re did them with iSquint,
it was a snap and they played great. iSquint is also free btw.

[Apple iPod] decrypters- which one

The handbrake windows users guide says: "First things first. Handbrake on
the Windows Platform does NOT decrypt Commercial DVDs. Let me repeat this.
It does NOT decrypt commercial DVDs. There are other applications to handle
this part of the process. You'll need something such as AnyDVD, DVD43 or DVD
Decryptor for this task." Which is preferred AnyDVD, DVD43 or DVD
Decryptor ?

Thanks Richard.

Re: [Apple iPod] original file could not be found

Hi John,

Everything I've done seems to have been correct. So, I suspect that the iPod is what is causing
the problem, as you said. The iPod is telling iTunes where my files should be located. I'll do
as you suggest and reset/reformat/reload the iPod. Thanks for the suggestion, John.

Hey Murray,

I tried to convert "Mary Poppins" for my kids, but Handbrake 9.2
couldn't decrpyt it. I guess you're lucky that you are using an Apple
platform, because under the Windows Guide of handbrake, it clearly
states, "Handbrake on the Windows Platform does NOT decrypt

copying DVDs. Somehow, Imtoo Converter is able to overcome it for
some films. Hence, Handbrake is useless to me without a decrypting

this topic in the next few years. It's an utter shame that we will
not be able to use our purchased items as we see fit so long as we do

Re: [Apple iPod] original file could not be found

We know that iTunes knows whether the iPod was last sync'd on the
machine to which it is connected.
So what I'd bet is the iPod library has information not only about the
files stored on it, but where they came from -- which is not where they
are now. Why would it care? Because one thing it's doing is checking to
see whether the files have changed, which podcasts you've listened to, etc.
So what I'd try is reset/reformat/reload the iPod and your problems
should go away.

Re: [Apple iPod] original file could not be found

This is weird. I had just the opposite problem.
Somebody else used my computer so I don't know if he
did something, but when I signed on there was no
iTunes icon on my dock. I tried to open iTunes from
the application folder and all it would do was display
the little Player thing. No Library, etc. at all. I
have a bootable external so i tried iTunes on it and
it was exactly the same...no library. So I wondered
what would happen to my iPod and plugged in the
Classic. Voila!!! Everything appeared as it should
be ( all tunes, lists etc) and has stayed that way.
Even with the iPod unplugged. Its now exactly as it
is supposed to be. Go figure. :-D.

Re: [Apple iPod] original file could not be found

not to start a fight but i would have used and have successfully used
the consolidate method. anyways, so goto your external drive where
your music resides and select the folder and do a "get info" look at
your permissions, are they set so everyone can read and write, if not
change it,. or at least make it so YOU can read AND write.

Re: [Apple iPod] Transfering movies from a DVD to my iPod

Thanks again for sharing, Murray. I'm just about to download
HandBrake, and I'll be back to tell all how it works out...

Here's the link to the suggested alternative for anyone who might
come across the same audio-video synchronization problem that I have
meet with several new Disney movies. I haven't tried this, yet, but
I might if HandBrake fails me...

http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=145796&highlight=DVD+MP4

thanks again!

[Apple iPod] original file could not be found

I did a search on this problem but couldn't find anything that would help. So,
I'm here
seeking your help and advice.

I've had no problems with iTunes since I started using it soon after it came
out. Until now.

I moved my library to an external drive by dragging it, as Kirk suggested,
rather than by
consolidating it, as Apple suggests. I reset the library's location in the
Advanced tab,
checked "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music
folder when
adding to library."

Everything looked and played as it should. Not exclamations, no "...could not be
found"s.

The exclamations and "...could not be found"s came up, I think, after I attached
my iPod to
sync. I'm suspecting that attaching the iPod has something to do with the
problem of
locating my files, but I'm not sure. Might be just coincidental. Not sure.

In iTunes, if I do a Get Info on a song the data is displayed but can't be
changed. If I go to
the folder on the external that contains the files and double-click on a song,
then it plays
and I can make changes with Get Info if I need to.

I can't see what the problem could be. Everything looks as it should. Not sure
how the iPod
could be causing the problem, if it is. My last resort is to double-click on
each file on the
external. Laborious and time-consuming. HAS to be a better way.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Re: [Apple iPod] Transfering movies from a DVD to my iPod

Hi All!

Thanks for the responses!

To settle the dispute what type of file does Handbrake produce?
MP4? If so, that is a fast import into Itunes (less than 5 seconds
for me on Windows Vista). The transfer to my 30 gb iPod takes a lot
longer (20-40 seconds), but that hardly puts my hair in knots.

I've seen elsewhere on another ipod forum that people like another
program, but it's name escapes me. It starts with a V??? I'll post
it when I get home. Someone explained a complicated way to overcome
the new copy protection blocks, if audio-video are not lined up.

[Apple iPod] Rental Question and another question.

I noticed that on the movies page there are some that are also
available for rental. How does that work when you put it on the Ipod?
Do you only have a couple of times that you can watch it and then it
goes away? Or does it go away the next time you plug in your Ipod to
the computer?

Another thing is what happened to the USA Channel on the TV Show section?
And the Sci-Fi Channel? I think there are also other channels that are
missing too. What happened to them?

Hi Kim,

Thanks for your suggestion about trying out the Bose earbuds. I just
learned that I live about half an hour from a Bose store. I will try to
get there on my next off.

Huh? It takes like 10 seconds to convert to ipod once Handbrake finishes.
I just rename the file from Movie to whatever and drag it into iTunes. My
daughter has 100s of converted DVDs in her ipod, as soon as we buy a new
DVD the first think we do is use Handbrake to get it into the computer and
iTunes. Handbrake is the best program -- I love it.
