Have you looked in iTunes Music? Do you see your artists in there?

Re: [Apple iPod] Migration from XP to Vista laptop

I am going to make some assumptions so forgive me if I am wrong.

You say that iTunes does not have any music. So I am assuming that you
copied all your music files from your old PC to your new one (F:\iTunes)
So when you say that, I suspect that you open iTunes expecting to see your
10K songs in your library but in-fact you see nothing in the library.

I am also assuming that you did a normal install of iTunes and I would
suspect/assume that you installed iTunes on your F drive.

So with that said. Did you copy the files 'iTunes Library.itl' and 'iPod
Games Library.itl' (option and only found if you have games) and the 'iTunes
Music Library.xml' from your old PC to your new one?
If not, did you tell iTunes to search your drive for music?

The itl files contain the database information for your iTunes library and
games. If you did not copy those files then try closing iTunes, copy the
files from your old PC to your new one, by default they are in the
C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
Then open iTunes and see if your library shows up.

Re: [Apple iPod] Ipod touch and podcast

In iTunes, go to the store. Select Podcasts from the genre list and
search for what you want. Lots of them are free so don't let them being
in the store scare you.

[Apple iPod] Migration from XP to Vista laptop

I tried but found nothing that tells me how to solve my problem.
Like many I suspect, I bought a new laptop with Windows vista
installed. My old computer used XP Pro and had its' hard drive
partitioned into 4 logical drives where drive F was Music. On Music I
had/have( still have the computer) all of my music files in a folder
named itunes music. In the itunes music folder was also itunes
library and itunes music library.

The new computer is partitioned like the old one and the music files
and itunes library files are like the old one also.

When I look at itunes edit..preferences..advanced..general both old
and new indicate F:\itunes music as the itunes music folder location.

The problem is that itunes apparently doesn't see my library or
music. There is no music in itunes. In fact, there are neary 10k
songs.

Can anyone offer any suggestions for how I should proceede to get
things back in sinc. I sure will appreciate any help.

Thanks, Mann

Re: [applekeynote] Re: Having trouble exporting to QuickTime

Thanks, Corey!

That is the best suggestion I’ve heard. I’ll have to try that next time. For this year’s movie, I ended up making it work by shortening the audio track so that it was about a minute shorter than the slide show, and it worked perfectly. When it was the same length, it either gave me an error message just as the export was finishing, or didn’t include the audio track.

Thanks again!

What I have done is create my presentation or slide show in keynote using what ever effects and transitions I wanted. Export into quicktime as a self playing show. then IMPORT into iMovie. iMovie is great for this because I can add some other effects to the show titles and some other things, even change the timing of the show if I want to. Once it is in iMovie I then drag my song, even one purchased from iTunes into iMovie I can place the song exactly where I want it and add fades and things like that to it as well.

This has worked real well for me in the past, then you can even save it to a DVD quality movie or post onto youtube

Hope that this helps, it is not as complicated as it sounds and for me it has been well worth it.

Thanks, Juan, for your suggestion.

Yes, I've done this before with iMovie
but was hoping for a more straightforward
solution. John McPherson's suggestion
worked very well.

[applekeynote] Re: funky word wrap. What makes that happen?

Adam -- I have the same problem!
I have to end each of my lines by pressing
a hard RETURN. If I just type straight text
with no RETURNs, then the wordwrap is
funky.

Same thing happens if I email a message
to the group.

And it's not just this Yahoo Group... this
occurs in all the other Yahoo Groups I've
used, including one I moderate.

Does anyone have the answer for Adam and
me?

Thanks for your help,

[applekeynote] Re: iDVD timing question

Adam -- The reason I use Keynote is
because there are several slides that
have text, and Keynote does gorgeous
effects with text!

There's the title slide:

Bridefirstname Bridemiddlename Bridelastname
and
Groomfirstname Groommiddlename Groomlastname

Then there's the slide with the bride's firstname that
introduces photos of the bride, in chronological order.

Then there's the slide with the groom's firstname that
introduces his photos.

Then there's the title slide that reads:

Bridefirstname & Groomfirstname Together

This section of the slideshow shows pix of the
bride and groom together, again in chronological order.

Then the last slide fades out to black and a
text slide fades in that begins the parents' final
message to the couple. Usually this is 3 or 4 text
slides.

I haven't found another slideshow program that
does this stuff. I have Photo to Movie, but it doesn't
have the cool character effects that Keynote does.

[applekeynote] Re: iDVD timing question

John -- Many thanks for your off-group help with this!
It worked GREAT. I was confused because
I did not think I was supposed to export it
as MANUAL ADVANCE, since I did not want
to advance each slide myself.

In your email you stated:

I've normally saved as 'manual' and it allows
the timings to do their thing, and you only
need to start it manually, but after that all
the build timings run as they were when you
created it - sounds odd but it works.

So - choose Manual Advance/Include Audio -
output as a high resolution Quicktime, then
double click the file to launch and click the
space bar to make it run and it 'should' then
do the auto builds and transitions as you created
them. The 'manual' advance is it seems simply a
default to make it do it on autopilot. Give it a go
and see what happens and if you have a problem
ping me and let me know. And if it works let me
know too!

So, John, it worked like a champ. I was able
to save the QuickTime file (yes, it was big) to
a CDROM that I gave to my Windows using friend.
He copied it onto his Windows laptop and played
it with the Windows version of QuickTime with a
projector at his daughter's wedding rehearsal
dinner. Worked like a champ!

Thanks again, John. It's great to have a resource
like this Yahoo Group where people help each
other.

[Apple iPod] Re: 160GB iPod Classic or 32GB iPod Touch?

I have the 160 Classic and love it. I cannot put
enough music on it to fill it (8,300 songs and
playlist galore). I have my contacts and calendar on
it with plenty of space to spare. Next are the
grandchildren's pictures.

[Apple iPod] Re: 160GB iPod Classic or 32GB iPod Touch?

Hi Richard,
I have a 32GB IPod Touch & an 80GB Classic. While I thoroughly enjoy
using both of them, I like the Touch much better because of its' ease
of use & additional features.

Re: [Apple iPod] 160GB iPod Classic or 32GB iPod Touch?

I agree, if your main use is music, though whether you choose the 80 or
160 would depend on which one you think is the better price deal. I
believe you should always buy the most storage you can afford, but an 80
will hole A LOT of music, ebooks and videos.
I have a Classic on which I've got a more than 900 songs plus many
album covers, and 65 podcasts, including a couple that are videocasts,
and a couple of books and I'm using maybe 7 Gb. If I paid a little more
attention to taking off stuff I've listened to, I'd use less space.
I listen mostly to the podcasts, including video. The video is great
-- for watching, say, Meet the Press, while on an airplane flight to New
Orleans.
I've used a Touch. The screen is larger than the Classic. If you're
into renting movies, you'll probably like that. You also can use the
calendar and email. The latter is pretty useful if you have regular
access to WiFi. The calendar isn't any better than what's on most any
cell phone -- at least until the 2.0 operating system and all the
software we've been hearing non-specifically about comes available.
The iPhone is a Touch with a telephone. Given the tone of your
question, I'd recommend not wasting the money. Until all that 2.0
software comes available, you'll be lots happier, especially money-wise,
with a Classic or Touch and a regular cell phone.

Hey everybody!I'm a new member and the main reason in me joining the group was to find out a little about ipods because as it is I'm in the middle of finding the perfect one for myself. I've never owned an iPod but have many of MP3's in my day and wanted to know what people thought of the product (iPod). My main question though is should I buy a 160GB iPod Classic or a 32GB iPod Touch? I'm really into music so I'm opting for the largest I can get in either category. So please every opinion and reccomodation is welcome =) ThanxKateri

Yes, but that would involve having to open up the ear-end and make a
connection there. I do not want to take the ear section apart.

I have two pair of Ipod original ear buds that my kids have damaged.
Both had the wire come loose at the plug end. I can repair by spicing
the ends (plugs) of other earbuds , Just essentially using the
plugs/jack and retaining the Apple ear buds. Since there are four
wires in the Apple ear bud cable, I assume each ear piece has two
wires. Thus I need to establish which two go to the right ear piece
and which go to the left. Does anyone know ? It looks like there is
a red wire, a green one , a red and green one.and a ground wire (bare
copper)

It might be tedious if you were to watch the sync process and do nothing
else, but wearisome? No: you just go away and do something more interesting.
How long will it take? I think about 30 GB/hour.

I have to agree with your analysis, Bob.

And if you're correct, the only way to fix it is to reinitialise the
iPod back to factory settings using iTunes. Then you'll have the
wearisome chore of resynching all your music and podcasts once more!

Good luck!

Thanks Archie,

Well, I did not skip this but it had no effect anyway. I think that a
pref file or something is corrupted. The trouble is that the pref file
would be on the iPod itself, since iTunes properly shows the podcasts.

80g 5gen ipod video
7500+ songs
560+ albums
No bootlegs or illegal downloads! All paid for hard copy CD's.
Im afraid I don't trust file sharing sites, too frightened of catching viruses & buggering up my puter.
I fixed a friends computer once who used various file sharing sites & he wondered how he "caught" over 10,000 viruses on it. Duh!!!

Hello Bob,

Skip this if I'm on the wrong track!

In the Main Menu, scroll down to Settings, click. Select Main Menu and
click. Scroll down to Podcasts and make sure there's a tick against
it. If there isn't, click!

Return to the Main Menu and Podcasts should again be visible.

[Apple iPod] Podcasts do not show

Hello, I have a 5G 60 gig iPod. Lately podcasts do not show up in the iPod
menu. They used to. They are on the iPod and my work-around for not seeing
them under the proper menu is to create a smart playlist for them. These are
podcasts known to iTunes, not some obscure variant of a semi-supported
version of the MP3 format so they should show. The list is empty. How does
one fix this? Latest firmware and software is on board. The Podcasts show in
the iTunes menu itself, but not on the iPod.

[applekeynote] Re: Having trouble exporting to QuickTime

What I have done is create my presentation or slide show in keynote using what ever effects and transitions I wanted. Export into quicktime as a self playing show. then IMPORT into iMovie. iMovie is great for this because I can add some other effects to the show titles and some other things, even change the timing of the show if I want to. Once it is in iMovie I then drag my song, even one purchased from iTunes into iMovie I can place the song exactly where I want it and add fades and things like that to it as well.

This has worked real well for me in the past, then you can even save it to a DVD quality movie or post onto youtube

Hope that this helps, it is not as complicated as it sounds and for me it has been well worth it.

iPhone now: 8 or 16 GB
iPod Touch now: 8, 16 , or 32 GB

Flash memory continues to get bigger and cheaper. I'd be surprised of those
figures haven't doubled in a year's time (or sooner!), and I wonder if Apple
are deliberately keeping the iPhone's storage smaller than the Touch's to
avoid the one taking sales from the other.

It would be good if iTunes included an option to back up to external
hard-drive. IMO CD/DVD is quite inadequate for the data volumes involved in
most libraries (roughly 10 albums per CD, 60 per DVD).

I would argue that any computer user should be doing regular backups of
*all* their files anyway, and iTunes Music would be included by default.
This doesn't explain why Apple would go to the trouble of providing a backup
function but then omit the obvious hard-drive option. I wonder if this is
because of restrictions in copying files bought from the iTunes Store?

Re: [Apple iPod] frozen :(

I think Otto was trying to suggest copying your iTunes Music directory to an
external drive.

Apple does a real bad job for backups and they assume the only backup device
in the world is a CD/DVD drive. Very unfortunate. I would love if they
developed a backup option that allowed you to create the backup to a hard
drive as if it's a tape drive but alas that's not likely to happen.

Otto is correct however that backups are very important so at the very least
you should try and keep your \MyMusic directory and the iTunes Library.itl
files backed up to a separate drive.

Selecting restore from iTunes will simply erase your iPod/Touch/Nano and I
believe it gives the option to format and then it will re-install it's own
software and the your music files and it will leave iTunes untouched except
to read from the library and sync those music files to your device.
