Re: [Apple iPod] New to iIPod

My new Honda Civic has a port for MP3 players - standard. I will need
only a cable to use my car's sound system to play my iPod. An
electrical connection is just above it.

Re: [Apple iPod] New to iIPod

The default is AAC at 128 k. I use MP3 at 160 k VBR. MP3s will play on anything so if you wantto use a player other than an iPod you don't have to convert all your music. Does that change the quality or just the space required?  Would I import my audiobooks the same way as I do for ACC (changing to m4b)?

It really is very easy once you have used one for about 5 minutes, but there
are some basics you need to understand.

iPods are not designed like some other players where you just drag music
files into them. They are designed to connect with iTunes on a Mac or PC and
music is then synced (copied) across according to criteria you set. The
default is to copy everything. If there's not enough room you get asked what
you want to do.

In preparation, download iTunes from
<http://www.apple. com/itunes/ download/>
and install it. Decide what bit-rate (quality) you want. The default is AAC
at 128 k. I use MP3 at 160 k VBR. MP3s will play on anything so if you want
to use a player other than an iPod you don't have to convert all your music.

Import a few CDs into iTunes and see how it works. iTunes is *not* just for
iPods. It is a library app for managing and playing music (and podcasts and
videos) and can be used as a server over a network too.

Of course, you will read the FAQ. :)

What do you mean by your car having an MP3 system? Does it have a socket for
connecting an MP3 player, or does it just play MP3 CDs?

Re: [Apple iPod] Syncing Libraries

Sharing the same iTunes Library file on a Mac-only network:-

I connected from the PowerBook to the iMac across our network using Mac
Personal File Sharing.

On the iMac, which has all my music, I created an alias of the iTunes
Library file. The name of the alias is 'iTunes Library alias'.

On the PowerBook, I renamed the existing 'iTunes Library' file as 'iTunes
Libraryx' so that I could revert to it later if required. I copied the alias
from the iMac and renamed it as 'iTunes Library', i.e. the usual name.

I started iTunes on the PowerBook and all the music files appeared, but
selecting a song gave the "not found" message. This made sense as
Preferences > Advanced > General still pointed to the PowerBook's drive. I
changed the location to the iMac's iTunes Music folder and iTunes updated
all its entries. Songs now play on the PowerBook.

I added a track from a CD to iTunes on the PowerBook and it was added to the
iTunes Music folder on the iMac. It did not appear in the iMac's iTunes,
which was already running. Restarting iTunes on the iMac resulted in a
failure to open the Library file as it was locked and in use (by the
PowerBook, of course). Closing iTunes on the PowerBook allowed iTunes on the
iMac to start up OK, and the track I had added now appeared. Starting iTunes
on the PowerBook connected to the iMac's iTunes Library file and music OK.

I've yet to try syncing my iPod to the PowerBook but the sharing works and
restarting iTunes to reopen the Library file after additions seems a small
price to pay.

The above is for Mac OS X. For 'alias', read 'short-cut' in Windows. I doubt
that you could use the same Library file in this way in both Mac & Windows
but you could reduce the number of actual Library files to 2, one for each
platform, with the others being aliases/short-cuts.

Re: [Apple iPod] Syncing Libraries

I suppose it can get messy. Simple answer is that everyone gets in the habit
of updating just the one iTunes and syncing to that one. Anyone wanting
to sync to a different computer will not use iTunes sharing but will still
use the NAS. They will have to update their iTunes before each sync. Given
that they won't necessarily know what's been added unless you have a system
(a list?), it might be easiest to delete everything from that iTunes and
then add everything now on the NAS.

I'm just trying something now to see if sharing the iTunes Library file gets
round this, but I doubt it would be cross-platform anyway.

Re: [Apple iPod] Syncing Libraries

True. It isn't really a problem. But if you have multiple computers
and two different people buying songs and adding songs to one folder on
the server, and one person always forgets to update the other computer,
and one person is too lazy to walk upstairs to make the changes, I hope
you get the idea. We have one mac, two pc laptops, and a pc desktop,
and it would be easier if we could sync our ipods from any computer
anywhere in the house, and not have to be tied to one computer to do
everything.

OK, but I was responding to the OP, where you asked only about keeping 2
libraries in step. iTunes Sharing is an easy, built-in solution.

I honestly can't see the problem with making one computer the server and
updating iTunes *only* via that computer. Ditto syncing an iPod.

I tried that, but the library files themselves are different formats on
mac and pc. That is to say, that the last time i copied the library
file from the pc to the mac, itunes on the mac didn't or wouldn't read
the file.

Re: [Apple iPod] i need mp3 convert into mp4

If you do a Google search for "convert avi to mp4 itunes" you will get about
562,000 hits although 99% of those will be useless.

There are a couple of freeware programs out there WinFF
http://www.winff.org/ is one and I am sure there are a few others but you
should remember the old saying you get what you paid for.

A couple or so years ago I was in the same boat as you and searched the
internet and downloaded and tried a dozen or so freeware and shareware
programs for converting different formats to be playable on the iPod. After
serious number of hours converting stuff I finally bit the bullet and spend
a few dollars on a commercial program. I found it was very much worth the $$
and I have been pretty happy with the ones I have purchased over the last
couple of years.

If you plan to download allot of stuff off the net for your iPod here are a
few suggestions.

If you want to capture streaming stuff:
Jaksta http://www.jaksta.com/ will download and convert for you. Great
company, excellent customer/tech support. Friendly folks to deal with.
Replay Media Catcher http://www.applian.com does a good job of capturing
streaming videos and music. Another good company with good tech support
although sometimes just a little bit slower to come out with updates for new
or changing formats but they are working hard and getting better at it.

Note:Capturing streaming video or music from the internet is legal as long
as it's for personal use only so these are not hacks or any kind of
copyright violation.

If you just want to convert:
My personal favorite for converting is Cucusoft http://www.cucusoft.com/
which does a fantastic job of converting most all video files to iPod
format. The conversion program is top notch with lots of features to allow
you to manipulate the conversion to your desires. The Tech support is so so
but fortunately I have not had to have allot of dealings with their tech
support. The program has been really rock solid.
Jaksta does have a convert option built into it so you can convert a file
you downloaded separate.
Replay Converter is also a good converter program and where Cucusoft seems
to fail in converting (because of differences in the format) Replay seems to
be able to convert but replay does not have as many options as Cucusoft.

Hope it helps.

Re: [Apple iPod] Syncing Libraries

Assuming when your talking about sharing a library you are referring to the
option under preferences to share your library.
I had thought the sharing of libraries was only for listening/playing and
then, as I recall, only non drm stuff. I didn't think the second computer
that is reading the shared library is able to download or sync anything only
play music through iTunes.

I am wondering, and I don't have a MAC so I don't know if the files are
formatted exactly the same as for the PC, if you set your library directory
up on a shared drive on your network then point both MAC and PC to that same
library and then when you add a file on the MAC side if you can just copy
the iTunes Library.itl file from the MAC to the PC.

I have done this in the past when I had 2 PC's sharing the same library. I
had my MyMusic directory on a network drive and I pointed both PC's to that
network drive location and then when I added a song or video on one PC I
only needed to copy the iTunes Library.itl file to the second PC.

Re: [Apple iPod] Syncing Libraries

You are ignoring what I suggested, which is easy and it works (although I
haven't tried it with NAS).
Enable sharing in iTunes in one computer. Update only that iTunes with new
music, etc.

In the iTunes on the other computer, enable the option to Search for Shared
Libraries (from memory; the wording might be different but it's obvious).
The iTunes from the first computer will appear in the left column. Select
that. Play your music from it.

This is sharing *one* library and keeping 2 in step becomes a non-issue.

Re: [Apple iPod] Syncing Libraries

they both point to the NAS. But if you make a change on one, you have
to go and make that same change on the other. For instance, if I add
Crazy by Gnarls Barkley using the macbook, I have to go to the PC and
add that song to the PC's library. I was wondering was there software
that does this automatically. One reason is that I can't add songs to
our iPods using the Shared Network option, or manage the library without
going back and forth between computers. I have 12,000 songs and
sometimes I find duplicates but if I forget to remove that duplicate
from the other computer's library, it can become a pain. Also, changing
tags and adding information on one computer will cause the other
computer to "!" the song or songs.

I'm confused. I thought you had your music files on the NAS, with both the
PC and the MacBook's iTunes pointing to the NAS.
iTunes sharing is independent of file sharing.

Thanks for your response, but the network sharing with the macbook
wouldn't allow changes to be made or add songs to the library on the
PC.

Re: [Apple iPod] Syncing Libraries

Why not use the Sharing feature in iTunes: share the one library with any or
all other computers?
You have all your music on the NAS, and your PC's iTunes points to that,
yes?

Enable sharing in that iTunes.

In the MacBook's iTunes, switch on the Look for Shared Libraries option.
This will then see the iTunes on the PC, which points to the music on the
NAS.

I do something similar. I have an old iMac G3. I replaced the hard-drive
with a larger one so it can hold all my music and act as an iTunes "server".
Using iTunes Sharing, I can listen to any music held on the iMac on my
PowerBook via our network.

I've never seen a Mac tool that can do this. You can, however, play
them back and record them to a different format; annoying, but it
works. See this article for more: http://www.macworld.com/article/134671/2008/08/playlist2509.html

[Apple iPod] Convert RAM/RA to MP3 on Mac

Hi all,

I just switched from PC to an iMac. On my PC, I was able to use
WavePad to download Real Player files and then save them as an MP3 for
my iPod. They have a Mac version, but it won't handle the Real Player
files. Same thing with the same company's Mac version of Switch.
Does anyone know of a simple yet effective (and free would be a bonus)
program for the Mac to convert Real Player to mp3?

Thanks,
Mikel

[Apple iPod] Syncing Libraries

I have a macbook with a small hard drive and a pc desktop. They both
access my music which is stored on a NAS. My question is, which I know
has been asked a thousand times, is how do I get the libraries to be the
same. If I add a song to the macbook library, how do I get the desktop
library to add the same song without having to go and do a manual add.
I tried to find the answer online, but everything is so confusing,
nothing talks about using a NAS, they seem to be talking about making
the music libraries the same on multiple computers. I don't want to
duplicate the music folder across computers, just the itunes library.
Understand? Is this something that Chronosync or Supersync can do? any
suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Griffin made an iTrip that worked with the first and second generation (original) iPods.

I've been searching for one for ages, but haven't turned one up new, used or even broken.

Could someone out there lend me hand?

Thanks

Tom

Sure, all youy have to do is read the facts. There is no argument
about why the ad was withdrawn. Unless you want to misinterpret it. I
just drew attention about it to the group as I thought it was on topic
and of interest.

Sound like a grounding issue in your MB Air
Is the table or the surface where the MB-Air is resting metallic? wood? plastic?
Is the projector yours?

Subject: [applekeynote] MacBook Air: 3. trackpad interference with projector

This is the third of three comments about using Keynote with a MacBook Air.

In normal use the large trackpad on the MacBook Air works fine.
However, I have found that when the computer is connected to a
videoprojector there is some sort of electrical interference that
makes it very difficult to place the cursor exactly. Instead of
moving smoothly as I move my finger it jerks around almost
uncontrollably. Although this doesn't matter during a presentation,
because I don't usually use the trackpad during a presentation, it
does matter at the start. I have found an easy solution, however,
that seem to work perfectly on my computer. If I touch the computer
with my left hand at the left of the trackpad, while manipulating the
trackpad with the right hand (a left-handed person would doubtless do
it the otrher way around), the trackpad becomes perfectly stable and
as I don't need my left hand for anything else while I'm using the
trackpad that seems, at least for the moment to be the complete
solution.

Re: [Apple iPod] Advertising Standards rap Apple

i dont think i did miss the point. they r claiming flash is necessary
to see the "standard" internet, when, in fact, flash is a
proprietary runtime, not a standard at all. maybe adobe/macromedia
conned most browsers to include it by default but this, imo, does not
make it a standard; common, no doubt; standard, i think not.

You missed the point. They were rapped for not telling the truth, not
because it doesn't have the things you mention. Quite different.

Re: [Apple iPod] Transferring songs from older IPod to new one

If they are all in iTunes and on your HD just plug in your new iPod and sync.

Subject: [Apple iPod] Transferring songs from older IPod to new one

I just purchased an 8 gb Nano Gen. 3 to replace a 2 gb Nano Gen. 2 that
is full. What I want to do is transfer all the songs from the older one
to the newer one. Is there an easy way to do this and is it even
possible?

Re: [Apple iPod] new iPods

Glad you liked it.

BTW is it really 11 months since the 80/160 Classics came out?

And I should've said "less than *6* years".

Re: [Apple iPod] Duplicate titles in library

Your method would work but it would be a tedious job, with the possibility
of further errors creeping in.

My method is simple and once you have made the initial steps you can leave
iTunes to get on with the job.

Maybe it's a specific problem with my Air. I hope not, though, as I
hate sending instruments back for fixing of vaguely described and
almost unreproducible problems. Apart from the time it takes, it
usually results in waiting (and in the worst case paying, though not
on this occasion because the guarantee is still valid) for a result
that is no improvement on what one had before.

[applekeynote] Re:MacBook Air: 2. unwanted rectangles appearing in slides

Humm that is interesting. I built and presented a large 2 hour graphic intensive presentation recently and had no issue I used the all black theme for most of my slides but had a few others thrown in as well, even a few videos. I had no issues and was a little worried that it would be too much for the air to handle but it worked perfect............ In fact after presenting I had more comments and questions about keynote and the air then I did about my topic!

I am working on a larger (4 hour) presentation and will keep a look out and let you know if I run into any issues.
