Use the FAQs in the tagline and follow the links.
You might also want to take a look at The iPod
Book by Scott Kelby. I have the third edition,
there could be a later edition, I bought this a
couple years ago.

Re: [Apple iPod] Dropped ipod needs repair but, WHO?

Thanks! but, in Texas that is wrong. I took my ipod to our Apple store at North Park Mall
and they said.

"Oh....sorry you've cracked your screen that will need replacing. We don't replace cracked
screens. You will have to do an internet search for ipod repairs and take it to one of those
companies".

Soooo I go back to my original question....

Is there an Apple store in a mall near you? The Apple stores have "genius
desk", you take your Ipod to the genius and they fix it.

I don't know enough about PCs to be sure of my answer, but on a Mac
you just go to the Preferences dialogue, then click on the Advanced
button in the toolbar, then on the Importing tab. Clear the checkbox
"Play songs while implorting or converting".

Maybe it will work the same on Windoze?

[Apple iPod] Manually synching only certain podcasts

I subscribe to several podcasts and listen to them on my 5G iPod at work. When I've listened
to an episode of a podcast, I then want to have it removed from my iPod, and have only the
ones that I've listened to removed, to free up disc space. I'd thought that this was done by
un-checking the episode in the iTunes listing, then synching my iPod. But I must be wrong
because the file remains on the iPod. Anyone know how this is done? Thanks.

[Apple iPod] Re: iTunes Questions...

I wrote a Perl script that can do this and much more. It's a command
line tool; it doesn't run within iTunes.

If you know Perl and are willing to customize one of the routines, the
script can update the tag info based on info in the file and folder
names.

Contact me offline if you want a copy of the script.

RE: [Apple iPod] iTunes Questions...

You can rip songs with RealPlayer or WMV and get the song titles w/o having
to have an account on iTunes. WMV rips into Windows Media format which (I
think) is not compatible with iTunes.

No.

Why do you need to access the song files? Any editing you do is in
iTunes, right?

Only if you have an iTunes Store account and have ripped tracks in
iTunes.

RE: [Apple iPod] iTunes Questions...

There is a program called Dr. Tag that works very well (PC only), but I
don't think it works on anything but MP3 and WAV.

You can select all songs on an album or one artist and change the tags for
them all at once.

[Apple iPod] Artists list in iPod menu

i have an album by laibach called sympathy for the devil. all songs are
by laibach but they have a couple other "band" names they use on some of
the tracks. for fun, i thought i would use those band names for their
tracks instead of just using laibach across the whole thing (so in
itunes and on the ipod it would match the album)...

so what i did was this:

1. i changed the artist name
2. i entered laibach into the sort artist field
3. compilation - no

now in the ipod's cover flow it looks perfect. the album is listed
once, in the laibach section, where it should be, w. all the tracks in
their right order. and when i play the album, the songs' artists change
from laibach to one of the others when it is appropriate, and then back
to laibach, etc. etc. all is well...

except:

now in the artists section of my ipod, laibach is listed like 4 or 5
times, all under "L"... and w. these other band names interspersed
between the multiple entries! this drives me up the wall. every time i
see it i want to body slam the ipod or maybe hit it w. a hammer. so
much so that i took the artists section out of the music menu. but i
don't really want to live w. it like that. i want to fix this. but i
can't see how there is anything at all wrong... it's just doing this and
maybe there is nothing we can do about it?

please help!

thank you.

Re: [Apple iPod] iTunes 7.7 issues

I personally have not had any problems since upgrading to 7.7.
Out of curiosity, how long have you waited to before you kill iTunes when
you believe it's frozen?

The first time I plugged my iPod into my PC after upgrading to 7.7 it took a
few minutes for iTunes to recognize the iPod but that only happened the
first time. After that it see's it immediately.

What version of PC are you running? XP? Vista?

[Apple iPod] iTunes 7.7 issues

I am having sync problems ever since I upgraded to iTunes 7.7. I am
using a 5G 80Gb iPod. iTunes runs fine by itself. My iPod runs fine by
itself. When I connect my iPod to my PC iTunes freezes!

Looks like there a long thread on the Apple Support forums. Anyone
here having problems?

No.

Why do you need to access the song files? Any editing you do is in
iTunes, right?

Only if you have an iTunes Store account and have ripped tracks in
iTunes.

[Apple iPod] iTunes Questions...

OK... is there ANY way possible - any "add-on", plugin, etc. for iTunes
that will allow me to view the song (file) location from within iTunes -
in the Library view list? I know I can right-click... hit Get Info and
see it that way... but I have LOT of songs to edit, clean up, etc. and
I'm ready to quit, after doing a load of them one by one. :)

Also - is there a way to do an album look-up online from within iTunes -
to fill in ID tag information?

PS - I'm usings iTunes on Windows.

THANX!!!!!!!

Re: [Apple iPod] Categorizing music lists

Mike,

That's the way it works on my iPod - 60GB 5th Generation Video iPod.
For example:
When I choose Music - Genres -Folk
It lists
Effie Munroe
Feist
Kate Walsh
Lereena Mckennit
Lucinda Williams
Megan Slankard
Patty Griffin

Which must be all the artist with albums/songs I have labeled as the folk genre. Looking at it though, I wouldn't classify some of these as folk, I'll have to change some genres I see.

Anyway, if I choose one of the artist in that category it will give me a list of albums or songs depending on whether there is more than one album. If your iPod does not do this it must be set up - or it has something to do with the way you labeled the genres - I'm just guessing here.

Is there a way to choose, say "Genre" on my iPod and then see it listed/grouped as Albums or
Artists within that Genre rather than just song titles? When the latter happens, I have to
actually start playing the song to see what album or artist it's by.

Forgive if this has come up before, but searching for this question wasn't easy without JUST

Re: [Apple iPod] Using another PC temporarily ?

Yes, you can. Make sure you say no when it asks if you want to sync, then choose to handle your music manually in the settings for this iPod

Drag the songs he wants to add onto his iPod. When he gets his PC back if he auto syncs he will lose any songs that are not in that iTunes library.

My son's PC, the one with his Itunes, is in for repair. He wants to
add some songs to his Ipod using another computer in the house. That
other computer has another Itunes account and Ipod registered to it.
How can we connect his Ipod to the other PC without having it zap his
hundreds of valued songs . ?

RE: [Apple iPod] Re: iTunes 7.7 full of bull. Brand spanking new problems.

I general, I haven't had any problems with iTunes. I have iPods on a
MacBook and a desktop. I did have some problems with the latest upgrade. I
suspect that Apple had not prepared for the onslaught of upgraders and new
users and the system was overloaded. Remember that on opening day the tried
to do the following:

1. Sell a bunch of 3G phones, esp. overseas. There were huge lines.

2. Move from dotMac to me.com

4. Upgrade iTouch and 1st gen. iPhone to software version 2.0

5. Upgrade iTunes to support the new software version.

I just think they got overwhelmed. Everything seems OK now.

2 Macs, 1 PC, 5 iTouch & 1 Classic with no problems at all & are
enjoying the new apps a lot.

Re: [Apple iPod] iTunes 7.7 full of bull. Brand spanking new problems.

Meg, I agree with your comments. After I checked the sites Lisa had
posted I forwarded the post on the issue to a friend of mine who has
several iPods & all of his CDs in iTunes. below is his reply. I
wanted his input before we published the info in our newsletter.

Quote "I've read many of these complaints. I've had absolutely 0
(zero) problems. As I've often said until we get a full disclosure
about the way a persons computer is set up, I don't put much faith in
these "problems". If someone wants to say, "some people have had
problems with iTunes 7.7 and you can go to www.xxx.xx if you are
having these problems" that would be appropriate. However, I don't
subscribe to an article about people having problems."

Actually, I've been a regular on the Apple Forums since 2003, so yes,
I've read the posts, plus lots of others, over the years. Every time
a new version of iTunes comes out (or of the Mac OS or iPhoto, etc),
there is a flurry of posts saying that it's a disaster. Once the furor
dies down, it generally turns out that there are some real issues with
fixes, incompatibilities with third party software and some user
confusion. Interestingly, when the next version comes out, there will
be people who are clamoring to go back to the previous version because
it is now a know quantity.

I think you missed the point, though in that, despite the fact that a
few people will chime in to say they have no problems, the vast
majority of the people who have no problems don't ever post anything
and, therefore, people with problems are disproportionately represented.

However, I suspect that we will have to agree to disagree on this.
I've said all I have to say.

Best of luck.

Re: [Apple iPod] Re: iTunes 7.7 full of bull. Brand spanking new problems.

I too installed 7.7. The only issue I had seen was the very first time I
synced the iPod after the upgrade it took a few minutes for iTunes to
recognize and start syncing the iPod but subsequent syncs have not shown
that same issue. So far 7.7 has been rock solid for me.

Re: [Apple iPod] iTunes 7.7 full of bull. Brand spanking new problems.

Fear mongering seems to be quite a strong - and inappropriate - phrase in this case.  Posting other's experiences hardly qualifies as "fear mongering".  Save the hyperbole for a more accurate situation.
Your fortunate that you haven't experienced any issues.  However, I take it that you're not aware of all the problems that us iPod classic owners experienced with iTunes when that product (classic) was released last September.  These new issues mirror those from last year, only they are far worse as they render the iPod useless wrt being able to sync new music/movies/podcasts.  Not much fun in having a very expensive paper weight.
Did you even read the forums that I linked to?  Because if you had, you would have read that there were several instances where people posted that they weren't experiencing the problems highlighted in the forum discussions.  So much for "highly skewed".

People who post on tech support forums are there because they have
problems. The people who don't have problems, don't post. Therefore,
your sample is highly skewed.

I, for, example, downloaded 7.7 the first day it was available,
version 2.0 for my Touch as soon as it was available and have had no
(zip, zero, nada) problems.

One should always have good back ups and exercise caution when
upgrading. However, there's caution and then there's fear mongering.

Best of luck.

[Apple iPod] Re: iTunes 7.7 full of bull. Brand spanking new problems.

I will also take this opportunity to speak up regarding lack of
problems with the iTunes upgrades in my family. In total, we upgraded
2 Macs, 1 PC, 5 iTouch & 1 Classic with no problems at all & are
enjoying the new apps a lot.

Re: [Apple iPod] iTunes 7.7 full of bull. Brand spanking new problems.

I guess I'm one of the ones that doesn't speak up. I have downloaded every iTunes upgrade for years. The only problem I had was a while ago when some songs in iTunes played back with terrible quality. That was quickly fixed with another upgrade. I have had no other problems including with the latest iTunes.

Re: [Apple iPod] iTunes 7.7 full of bull. Brand spanking new problems.

I approached hooking up the iPod with some
trepidation in view of comments, but I had no
problems at all. I have a 60GB video that is
primarily used for audiobooks and music and some
newscasts are downloaded if I am going off to
appts. and want some entertainment while I wait to
see a doctor or dentist. I listen to the
audiobooks at night when drifting off to sleep and
dock the iPod in a stereo radio clock in the
living room if I want stereo music drifting
through the house. I have given my son all my CDs,
he can dust them, they are all on my computer and
iPod (and on two backups), the last two albums I
bought were downloaded from Amazon. I can't
remember the last time I turned on my Bose, I
don't even use it for "theatre" these days. The TV
as is is enough for me.

I am using the iPod with my Dell/Vista, I decided
it was easier here than hooking it up to the
MacBook.

[Apple iPod] Universal Dock Remote & Ipod Video Display

Hi all, I'm new to the group. I've tried to search this question out,
but I don't see in similar posts or FAQs on this.
2 Questions:

1) I have a Apple Brand universal dock for my 80GB Ipod Classic. Is it
me, or does the menu button on the small remote not work for anything?
What modes does this button work?

2) Are there any other docks/remotes for the Ipod that a) allow you to
see the menu screens on your tv and/or b) actually browse the menu
using the "menu" button or similar control.

With the universal dock, when you go to exit out of a video using the
remote, it usually defaults to your music library.

Re: [Apple iPod] iTunes 7.7 full of bull. Brand spanking new problems.

there have been all kinds of reported problems with iTunes 7.7, especially
with connecting/syncing an iPod classic/iPhone/Touch.  There are many reports of iPods not
being recognized at all by iTunes 7.7.  I refuse to install the updated iTunes until
they fix the problem.  Seems pretty severe to me.
Here are just a few of the forums on the Apple support site that talk to the issue.  It's been 2 weeks since
Apple released iTunes 7.7 and still no fix...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1601192&tstart=0
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1601396&tstart=60
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1604293&tstart=0
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1593016&tstart=0
There have been some workarounds identified, but IMHO, we shouldn't have to rebuild iTunes libraries
to get iTunes to recognize an iPod...

I am running 10.4.11 on a Mac Book Pro, latest QuickTime and of course
iTunes 7.7 (43). I bought a few albums at the iTunes store. Upon
downloading, some downloads initiate, then I get "error -61 You are
not allowed to change settings" or something similar to that. Retrying
ultimately downloads all the rest. Then I try to play them. On iTunes
itself and later on the iPod some of the titles are skipped over, no
sound. Which songs get this treatment seems random (per song, not per
occurrence), some also got that error -61 earlier - but not all.
Playing the song in column mode (in the Finder) one hears silence. On
the iPod one song crashed the Pod!

Also, when the computer is done syncing the iPod it is dismounted. I
never had this kind of trouble before. Yikes.

isn't there?

RE: [Apple iPod] Making a copy of my external drive

As I understand it:

1. You are trying to keep identical copies of your music at home and at
work and these are both attached to iTunes at both locations?
2. Anyway, since your files are on an external drive you can do the
following:

a. Temporarily detach your drive and take it to work. Assuming this is
OK with your boss.
b. Hook up your drive to the work computer.
c. Delete the iTunes directory from your work computer. Or, more
safely, move or rename until after you complete the move.
d. Copy the iTunes directory from your external drive into the place
where the old iTunes director was.
e. You might have to 'tweak' iTunes to recognize this new library as
belonging to it.

Subject: [Apple iPod] Making a copy of my external drive

I know this has been covered before, but I can't seem to find it.

I have my iTunes set up to put all the music on an external drive. I
have a second computer and external drive that I use at work.

I have updated the library data files on my home computer and the
music on the first external drive significantly. I want to copy all
the songs and library data to the second computer and external drive.
What I need are detailed instructions for removing the data and
music from the second computer and external drive and then copying the
needed data from the computer and first external drive to the second
computer and drive. (I have had mixed success doing this in the past;
it seems everything didn't get copied.)

Many thanks!

Russ
