[applekeynote] Re: SVG

I thought I saw a tech demo around somewhere that did this. It wasn't very good, but if the
slides were basic, it worked. However, I've been unable to find it again.

There is this program:

That's excellent news. It makes the 'Air' a lot more useful to me,
potentially. I'm just waiting to see what the next generation of Pros
offes (they're due for at least a speed increase) and then I'll choose
what to buy.

Somewhat related: I note that MacBook Air only offers video mirroring.
I assume that means you can't get a presenter view up on your own
screen? There were patches for the iBooks to overcome this limitation,
if I remember rightly. I assume that the the plastic MacBooks (and
therefore the Air) have this same limitation, and are therefore ripe
for a patch?

Not true. I bought a MacBook Air as soon as they were available. I use it constantly and I love it! I use presenter notes (Turn off mirroring) in boh PPT and Keynote. It works just fine!

Re: [applekeynote] Re: MacBook Air: 1. connection to the videoprojector

Richard, The mirror only limitation was impose by Apple in the old PowerPC iBooks.
Some people hacked the system releasing them from this limitation.

With the Intel® Apple products are now free of that limitation using Intel's chip set.
I don't have a macbook - air, so I will have to believe what Macworld writes.

From Macworld:

Tell me more about the micro-DVI port's powers.

Though the MacBook Air uses the smaller micro-DVI port rather than the MacBook's built-in mini-DVI, the computer otherwise has the same video capabilities as the MacBook: it will drive external displays as large as 1,920-by-1,200 pixels, including Apple's 23-inch Cinema Display, and can use that display as either an additional display or as a mirror of the laptop screen's contents. The MacBook Air also uses the same Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics processor with 144MB of shared memory as the MacBook.

My guess you need to run the utility for the screen to rediscover that it has an external monitor connected it.

I imagine that having to push a DVI connector into place on that
hinged flap/port on MacBook Air is quite fiddly. DVI connectors, in my
experience, are pretty stiff. Small wonder if you didn't manage to
push the connector all the way home: I wouldn't want to break a
MacBook Air. Apple suggests tilting the Air with one hand, while
plugging cables and USB devices in. No doubt it's not a mistake you'll
make now you're watching for it.

[applekeynote] Quicktime Clipped

G'day

I have the latest Keynote and one of its absolute strengths in a PC
world of education is its ability to be used on a PC using quicktime
and take over full screen. However I tried this yesterday and it
seems the open fullscreen in QT does something weird to the QT on a
PC I think it is QT itself but as this is important to people who
have to use their presentations on PCs like I do in a university it
needs to work.

The QT when exported opens fine on a MAC but when you transfer it to a
PC it has the sides clipped and not the full slide is showing. - you
can then press escape and it exits full screen and when you enter full
screen from the player in the latest QT it then opens OK. I noted
that if I open the QT in QT Pro on my MAC then unclick the full screen
and save as, then take that new file and click the full screen box
again and save as a second time the file still does it.

ANy ideas why it is doing it .... btw the monitor is the same monitor
for both platforms and both are set to the same resolution.

Regards
Allan

Re: [applekeynote] Sharing a presentation

Okay, I'm going to reply to my own post again. I discovered on line that this problem is caused by a QT glitch. In the meantime, here is a workaround:

Export to QT, so you have the video file, but no sound. Now open package contents of the KN file and find the audio track of the voice over. Open it in QT Pro. You can copy that track and paste it into the movie file and you should be all set. I tried it with a test file and it seems to work fine.

The audio track also has 0 seconds duration.  At first I was using Record Slideshow with an older presentation that has been upgraded through various versions of KN. As a test, I created a new one from scratch and tested it. Same results. Seems others are doing this successfully.

Also, export for Youtube, QT, and iPod all behave similarly. Is there perhaps something in my preferences that is causing the trouble?

One problem is that when I go to export to Quicktime, even though there is an option which I

My other problem is that in all resolution modes the video is choppy.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

You are perfectly correct, and I should have thought of this myself.
The projector (the same one I have used many times) has a plastic
case and a two-pin power supply, so it is not earthed. In the past,
however (pre-Air) I always had the computer connected to mains power
because I didn't trust the battery. On the occasion referred to,
however, I was running the computer off the battery, because it was
new enough that it oughtn't to have battery problems, and because
this was a practice not a real presentation. After reading your
suggestion I checked that the problem persists if the computer is not
plugged in, but disappears when it is.

Moral: don't run the computer off its battery during a presentation!

I agree with you. Also, let's not forget the role of the presenter in all this. Well constructed slide shows are just one element of a great presentation.

Re: [applekeynote] World's Best Presentation Contest Results

We are talking about 2 things here. One is the theme that gives you a border, you would have to buy that.
And it is done with an image of graduations and it cannot be edited unless you were to do that to a couple of images within the .key package.

The other comment I was making was you can do something similar without the theme using simple shapes.
That is what my recent comments where about. And no, you don't have a border with that method.

Yes, that works. Or as I said, make the shape the same size (height) as the theme size and use the same colors as set as the background.

Re: [applekeynote] World's Best Presentation Contest Results

I wasn't saying that the action part of it was tough (once you described it) but seems like if there's a black-to-grey gradient, for example, it might be tricky. The colour palette's eyedropper might do the trick, however, sampling at the same "elevation" on the background gradient as the high/low extremes of the shape.

Tough? Start with a flat color and experiment. Say Black. Black box on the left side and right side. Now slide them in and out. Pretty simple.

You can do it with a 768 px tall shape and put the same graduated fill in as your graduated background. A match for it. So you don't see the masking shape move, you just see the image exposure reducing or expanding. Of course, an image background will not work.

Huh. Real nice. I'll have to experiment with this. Option 2 (shapes with matched backgrounds) seems tough!

And btw you created these themes? You're the "john" from Keynote Themepark? I bought Spotlight off you some time ago. GREAT WORK!

Sorry, my movie pages don't have the navigation on them.

It's done with one of my themes that you put Move/Action/Builds on the side masking elements.
Or you could do the same thing with rectangular shapes that seamlessly match the background to expose the image behind.
It's a nifty effect, but you can't get the judges of the Best Presentation contest to look at. Send it in as PDF : (

Hi!

Did you create that Keynote prez? It may be simple, but how did you make a mask resize as an action??

Thanks :)

I don't think a presentation can be judged properly as a bunch of stills.
That is like reviewing a movie with still frames from every 5 minutes. Go here:
tell me how much you lose if this was submitted as a couple still slides?
You need to allow Keynote users to submit QT or .key files and judge that.
Half of the job of what I create is the programming of it. It's the choreography
of the thing. I don't want my work reduced to a series of stills and would never
submit my Keynote presentations as PDF. You obviously  don't "get"  or recognize
all what a presentation can be if you simply drop what can be a vital aspect of it.

anyone surprised?

Re: [applekeynote] World's Best Presentation Contest Results

Well, I can't know for sure, which is why I said "seems." However, the object on slide 55 is from Keynote, and slides 56-58 look very Apple indeed. Other charts and graphs have a Keynote feel.

The only thing I know that is definitely from Keynote is the shot of the planet from slide 55. Other things could be done in PowerPoint, but are native to Keynote.

How could you tell? I grant you the quality is higher than you get in
a typical PowerPoint presentation, but I didn't see anything in these
stills that absolutely couldn't have been done with PowerPoint..
