for at the time I hadn't worked out that I had more than one variable
to factor in.
The challenge of having a new toy is that one can play with it too
much! I'd changed a setting in my start up menu to include iTunes, so
of course if I added the external drive some time after OSX start up
and then 'opened' iTunes I was setting myself up for a problem.
Needless to say, iTunes has been removed from my start up menu now.
