have ran into that same exact problem but I have found it's not a number of
files limit but rather a file name size limit. Anytime I select a lot of
files to add if it fails I go back and do it again and exclude the long file
named files and then the selected ones get added. At times I find I need to
shorten the long file name files to get them into iTunes.
Next time you run into that problem try looking at the length of the files
names and exclude the long ones.
