My son had a 20g iPod several years ago that exhibited this same problem (he dropped it) but I could not get it to work at all, the hard drive was just clicking and whirring. I bought a 20g iPod hard drive on eBay and replaced the hard drive in that iPod but it still didn't work. So I'm suspicious that it might not be just a hard drive problem when that noise crops up, or else I just got another bad hard drive, or there was more than one thing wrong with that unit. Who knows. I know I can get this 60g iPod apart. Maybe I'll try that method again if it goes completely bad, but it is a pain to try and replace the hard drive in an iPod.

I
think
we
have
hard
drives
going
bad.
I
have
a
whole
year
of
service,
I'll
hang
in.
I
just
hope
when
it
gets
here
it
actually
is
working.
It
sure
wasn't
when
I
sent
it
to
Apple.
My
little
Nano
backup
is
sweet.
Like
you
I
want
a
high
capacity
player
so
I
would
have
to
replace
the
60
gig
that
is
in
transit
if
it
becomes
unreliable.
But
I
am
not
going
to
jump
at
doing
that
while
there's
still
service
on
it
(if
I
get
the
service).
