I know exactly how you feel, Linda. It took me hours of on-line
research but I finally figured out that what you want is called an
"Auxilliary Audio Input" (AAI). It's just a simple 1/8-inch coaxial
stereo input jack that's mounted on the dashboard and connects via a
patch cord (available for a couple of bucks from Radio Shack or just
about any other electronic retailer) with the earphone jack on your
iPod. The AAI is available with the sound system of just about EVERY
new car you'll find, BUT you may have to do a special order to get a
car with this feature. For some reason, new car dealers seem to be
totally unaware that there are TENS OF MILLIONS of potential car
buyers out there who also own iPods and other portable audio players
that they want to use in their cars. And that the AAI is BY FAR, the
best way to do that. Also the least expensive.

My next new car will have a sound system WITHOUT a CD player -- either
standard or MP3, assuming they even have such an animal -- but WITH an
AAI as well as an AM/FM/XM tuner.

Talk to your dealer about ordering a car with what you want.

And EVERYBODY ELSE -- next time you take your car to a dealer for
maintenance/repair, wander into the new car dealership and tell the
manager that if he doesn't order EVERY new car with the AAI included
that he's an idiot!

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.
