i think you didn"t charge your Touch enough for the 1st time,
i have this problem too with my nano,
you had to charged it for about 8hours

My touch seems to give me about 2 hours of music play time on a fully
charged battery- this seems really low.
Is this an accurate play time or is there something wrong?
