The only practical solution that I have found was to make my slides with many builds in to several slides with fewer builds, by copying the slide, and having builds 1-5, say for the fist phase, on the first slide, then having that endpoint as the start of the builds for the next phase on the next slide etc.

I notice that when I present a slide with builds (e.g.- bringing text
and graphics in one at a time) I can move forward through the builds
one at time BUT when I try to go BACK using the arrow keys, it always
takes me back to the start of the slide. Some of my slides have many
builds and I often back up during a presentation one build a time to
help my audience understand clearly what I am discussing. Is there
any way to back up one build at a time during a presentation.
Thanks for your help.
