Probably the cleanest one I have found is Music Rescue

The company appears to be on your side of the pond. I have not had to do any
full restores with his program (yet, Knock on wood) but I have played with
restoring individual files.
The free license works for only 1 computer while the purchased license lets
you restore your iPod to any number of PC's
I purchased the license just to be safe and because I wanted to support
their company just because I like the software.
The software comes with 2 forms. 1 will sit on your iPod and another will
sit on your PC. Both seem to work without any problems for me.
