You are correct you want it on the K. And you are wanting it to show the Zero. - am sure those are tiny wires. Might be easier to strip those wires by either using a lighter or a match. Good luck.

OK, finally found my meter in the basement. Which setting do I need
it on to get the correct type of readings? My choices are DC, AC,
Check, K (with an Ohm symbol) I assume "K", what readings should I
expect ? When simply on, I get a flashing 300.00 ohms . . If I touch
the two leads together, I get zero. My first attempt at all wires got
no changes, I may need to get better connections to the small wires
