I just plugged it into a wall charger and it came up making that noise, sometimes I get a sad iPod, sometimes I get a message to connect to computer and restore (in several languages). Right now it just stopped making that noise and I see the menu came up and now it is charging.
When I get back home I'll take it to the Apple store but I don't expect they will do much since it is out of warranty.

Similarly,
I
had
a
camera
that,
when
the
temps
dropped,
the
damn
thing
would
not
"click".
I
finally
figured
it
was
the
cold.
So
any
small
metal
or
plastic
moving
part
can
create
the
same
problem.
In
some
cases,
it
doesn't
take
much.

Carl,
Two
things
...
Firstly,
don't
forget
that
batteries
produce
power
with
a
chemical
reaction
that
slows
as
the
temperature
drops.
Also,
iPod
drives
do
use
moving
parts,
and
I
am
not
sure
how
they
are
affected
by
the
cold.
When
i
was
skiing
and
trying
to
use
an
iPod
in
an
external
pocket,
I
found
that
performance
dropped
hugely.
I
am
pretty
sure
that
I
experienced
something
similar
to
what
you
saw
and
was
similarly
freaked
out.
Just
bring
the
iPod
back
in
let
it
warm
up
and
see
if
things
get
better.
You
can
also
try
to
reset
the
iPod
using
the
proper
the
key
combo
(I
can
never
remember
what
it
exactly
is
because
I
have
different
gen
iPods
and
it
is
different
on
different
versions).
Then,
if
possible,
as
a
last
resort,
try
doing
a
restore
when
you
can
connect
to
your
computer.
If
you
do
manage
to
resurrect
your
iPod
on
your
skitrip,
try
putting
it
on
an
inside
pocket
where
your
body
heat
will
keep
it
a
little
warner.
Good
luck,
hopefully
all
is
not
lost!
