[Apple iPod] transferring library to new computer/backing up

My son got a new computer for Christmas. Now I need to transfer his
libray to his computer. I have tried to back up and/or burn CD. I read
the itunes help, but when I put in blank cd or a dvd. I get a message
that I need to put in a black one. But it is blank.
Does anyone have any tips for back up or transferring?
