I agree with what you say but the iPod would not dominate the market
as it does if Apple had not catered for the PC market. So, what do you
do? Sell iPods preformatted for Windows or stock both PC and Mac
versions with increased costs?

When you consider that we Mac users are far more likely to know about
reformatting Windows-formatted drives to Mac than Windows users are to
know about reformatting Mac-formatted drives to Windows, then I think
Apple did the right and obvious thing.

Having said that, I'm surprised that on first connecting an iPod to a
Mac that you aren't prompted to reformat it. I can't remember if I
needed to do that with my Gen4.
