[Apple iPod] Songs"appear" but don't play

2nd gen 4 gig ipod
Mac OSX 4.11
iTunes 7.5

Manually load play list
playback skips some songs
not playing songs appear during scroll
but only briefly

don't know how to remedy
suggestions appreciated
