Short answer: use Senuti.
<http://www.fadingred.org/senuti/>
Long answer: the iPod family is designed for one-way music/video
transfer, i.e. from computer to iPod. Going the other direction
is unsupported by Apple because the music industries' fear users
would freely copy music amongst themselves. As a result, several
3rd-party tools (e.g. Senuti) have appeared to satisfy this need.
