bargain basement audio and real hi-fi, for instance.
There should be no single effect that stands out, just a decrease in
overall clarity and low level detail and an increase in compression
"artifacts" (sounds that shouldn't be there).
The only way to be sure what works for you is to try a test. Choose 2
very different tracks, perhaps one of acoustic folk and another of
complex orchestral music. Different music will expose different
aspects of compression. More is better, of course, but it can get
tedious!
Change the Import setting to a low one, say 32 k. Convert those
tracks. (Make sure you keep the originals!)
Compare with the originals. Can you hear a difference? If yes, change
the setting to 64 k.
And so on, increasing the setting each time.
You don't say which bit rate you are using now, so I can only guess at
what point you should call off the comparison. ;)
