You will eventually have to deal with the Vista
service pack, so I would deal with that right away
and then work at returning iTunes to the computer.
If it helps, I have a Dell and had no problems
with the service pack. What brand laptop, what
occurred, someone might be able to help you.

In the meantime, treat the iPod carefully if that
is the only place you have your music. I take it
you did not have a backup of your computer?
