[Apple iPod] Repairing / Rewiring buds ?

I have two pair of Ipod original ear buds that my kids have damaged.
Both had the wire come loose at the plug end. I can repair by spicing
the ends (plugs) of other earbuds , Just essentially using the
plugs/jack and retaining the Apple ear buds. Since there are four
wires in the Apple ear bud cable, I assume each ear piece has two
wires. Thus I need to establish which two go to the right ear piece
and which go to the left. Does anyone know ? It looks like there is
a red wire, a green one , a red and green one.and a ground wire (bare
copper)
