[Apple iPod] help for newby with Ipod

I have an Emac with OS 10.2.8 and am using 4.0 iTunes. I was given an
ipod shuffle. I connected it with the usb cable and it has charged.
According to the instructions a Setup Assistant should open up to
finish setting it up. That has never happened.

Also, it does not show up in the Source Pane in iTunes. I am lost as
to what might be wrong. Would anyone have suggestions.
