If you are just rescuing all your media files from the iPod, you can do it fairly easily without special software,
Set your computer to see invisible files. then root around in the iPod's files. The one you want has a bunch of files named, 00, 10, 02, etc. with mp3 files helpfully named QFRD.mp3 --something like that. Take those files and drop them onto iTunes after iTunes is set to store your music where ever you choose. iTunes will label the files and store them according to its structure (make sure the preferences are set in iTunes to Copy files and keep them organized: should be in the advanced tab in preferences). Turn off invisibles when you're finished.
This method won't copy back the play lists or counts, but it's free.
