If you select to allow the iPod as a drive can you access the drive and read
from it?
Could this be a problem on your MAC?
Maybe the USB port went bad?
Is there another program running that is blocking the iPod/USB?
On Windows PC's there are 3 background tasks that run for the iPod/iTunes.
Does the MAC have the same and are they running?
As a last resort you can try doing a restore but I would want to make sure
the MAC was good before erasing and trying to format the iPod.
