all hd's will die..internal or external makes no difference..the odds of both an internal and external dying at the same time are small..and that would give you time to get a third drive to replace the defective one.

By definition it is a backup actually. And yes, the world might end
tomorrow, but for now an external is a very good way of backing up
your tunes.
