Did you try intermediate bit-rates? General opinion is that 192 CBR is
"transparent" with MP3 and should be easily so with AAC. I use 160 VBR MP3
(which typically averages around 200) and find it sounds pretty good.

Apple chose 256 AAC for their premium rate downloads at iTunes.

I doubt you'd get any further improvement unless you go lossless, as Eugene
says.

And yes, I'm an "audiophile". Most of of my "proper" hi-fi is Linn.
