I don't think the ipod should be on when charging, nor when syncing.

I never heard of this. A quick web search shows that it's referring
to the main window pane (i.e., the main part of the iTunes screen)
containing the list of all the songs that are loaded in iTunes. In
the Microsoft Windows environment, a single "window" can contain
multiple "panes", or sections.

The main window is not labeled "source". You're right. The wording
isn't very good.

If you can get songs onto the ipod, you're all set. Just make sure
it's off when charging. After disconnecting from the PC, plug in
headphones and switch the ipod to on and hit play. Hopefully, you'll
hear music.
You can try searching for "loading songs ipod" in YouTube
(http://www.youtube.com). I see a few videos that may help (I haven't
watched them to see if they are any good). You should be able to find
tutorials online if you search.
If you do go back to the store, just ask them to demo the setup.
Maybe they'll have a machine on which to show you.

Good luck.
