[Apple iPod] problem playing an album

OK, now this should be about the most Mickey Mouse of tasks in using an
iPod, but it's not happening for me.

For the first time since the day I bought it a week ago, I just want to
play a single album that I have loaded onto my unit. I can find the
album and play the songs individually. But what about playing the album
as a whole without having to choose the songs one at a time?

The manual for this classic iPod says to do the following:

"Select the playlist or album and press Play/Pause"

I did that. The title of the first song on the album appears on the Now
Playing display. But it says "1 of 0"...no that's not a typo, one of
ZERO. No music plays. The elapsed time and remaining time both show
0:00.

Obviously I've done something wrong somewhere. Does anyone have any
idea what that might be?
