Our older projector doesn't automatically detect input--and it's got
three--VGA, standard RCA video and S-video. I have to use either the
menu or remote to change the input mode. I also had a decent Benq that
sometimes got confused, and wouldn't recognize input, so I would have
to manually select the input--although, IIRC, it was always when I was
trying to use S-video that this happened.

In any case, I wonder if this is your problem--that the projector
isn't automatically detecting the input. You can try manually
selecting the input, but sometimes, it has helped me to sleep my Mac,
make sure all the connections are set, and then wake again. These are
the steps I would take if I had this problem.
