[Apple iPod] copying lost songs back to computer from iPod.

I wish these things came with a six-year-old to troubleshoot.

I have had lot of problems with iTunes. I thought I had my library
cleaned up and functioning off an external drive. However, now I am
finding some tunes that I used to have in the computer/external drive
are missing. They are still on the iPop, having been loaded from the
same computer.

So, how do I copy songs off the iPod back to the computer without
synching the two? I don't want to lose or discard anything on the
iPod, just want to copy some songs from it back to the computer.
