Rob,

This must be one of the most frequent topics here.

Each iPod has its own ID and preferences.

Create a playlist and put all your music in it. Ask your wife to do the same.

Connect each one in turn and set set its sync prefs to full manual or
sync only selected playlists (I don't recall the exact words but it's
pretty obvious).
