[Apple iPod] can't get my new macbook to recognize roommate's shuffle

Hi I have my 160gb ipod set to work w/my new macbook and for some
reason it won't recognize my roommates shuffle. Nothing happens when I
plug it in. I have my itunes set to manual. I had an old ibook and
was able to plug both into it. Please help.
