[Apple iPod] Using external hard disks for iTunes library

I want to keep my main music on an external / networked storage.
I can see that if I sync my ipod when this is connected it will
transfer the songs.

but what happens when the storage isn't there?
and I need to sync?

Will the ipod loose all the songs?

The scenario I'm working on is I'm usually syncing while at home (in
UK), where I have my music collection on my network.

I use a laptop, and when home can ask it to find that folder and then
sync a playlist based on that to my ipod (new nano).

But I travel (eg to US) to see family, and there want to add a song
and/or photo / video - maybe buy a cd there.. or take family photos.
What happens if I sync while in the US and the main music collection
isn't there..?

Ideas?
