helpful to some...
During an iPod software update my 80GB classic died. I tried the
infamous "5 R's", but no matter what I did I just had a apple on my
screen. iTunes would not recognize the iPod, and it would not show up
under my computer. After talking to a rep at Apple, I tried a reset
AGAIN!, and totally uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled.
FIRST IMPORTANT NOTE: According to the girl I was talking to at Apple
there is a known problem on the recent versions of iTunes that on some
computers you get errors if you install the new version over the old!
I didn't ask why they didn't say this up front so I could avoid the
hassle.
Even that didn't help in my case.
I actually signed on here to see if anyone had any other tips, but all
I saw was a string of "5 R's", so I moved to a deeper search. On the
Apple website (I don't know why the Apple service tech didn't know
about it)I found a page about another solution.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61584
A link on that page told how to put the iPod in "Disk Mode" to
reformat the disk. For those that don't want to be bothered with
Apple web sites,
Reset (select + menu) until you get an apple logo.
Immediately release the buttons and press and hold select and
play/pause until a check appears.
Connect to the computer.
In my case, when I connected iTunes saw it and allowed me to retry the
upgrade, but according to the web page I could have done a format from
my computer and started over.
Good luck
