[Apple iPod] Vanishing iPod

I've got a 15GB Dock Connector model... shows only the Apple when I
plug it in to the laptop (iBook running 10.3.9, iTunes 7.5), then goes
to 'scan disk' icon, scans the disk and comes up with the 'disk scan OK
(check mark) icon... need to restore it, but it doesn't show up on
either the desktop or in iTunes... is it dead?
