Some people hacked the system releasing them from this limitation.
With the Intel® Apple products are now free of that limitation using Intel's chip set.
I don't have a macbook - air, so I will have to believe what Macworld writes.
From Macworld:
Tell me more about the micro-DVI port's powers.
Though the MacBook Air uses the smaller micro-DVI port rather than the MacBook's built-in mini-DVI, the computer otherwise has the same video capabilities as the MacBook: it will drive external displays as large as 1,920-by-1,200 pixels, including Apple's 23-inch Cinema Display, and can use that display as either an additional display or as a mirror of the laptop screen's contents. The MacBook Air also uses the same Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics processor with 144MB of shared memory as the MacBook.

Subject: [applekeynote] Re: MacBook Air: 1. connection to the videoprojector
I imagine that having to push a DVI connector into place on that
hinged flap/port on MacBook Air is quite fiddly. DVI connectors, in my
experience, are pretty stiff. Small wonder if you didn't manage to
push the connector all the way home: I wouldn't want to break a
MacBook Air. Apple suggests tilting the Air with one hand, while
plugging cables and USB devices in. No doubt it's not a mistake you'll
make now you're watching for it.
Somewhat related: I note that MacBook Air only offers video mirroring.
I assume that means you can't get a presenter view up on your own
screen? There were patches for the iBooks to overcome this limitation,
if I remember rightly. I assume that the the plastic MacBooks (and
therefore the Air) have this same limitation, and are therefore ripe
for a patch?
