Okay, I'm going to reply to my own post again. I discovered on line that this problem is caused by a QT glitch. In the meantime, here is a workaround:

 Export to QT, so you have the video file, but no sound. Now open package contents of the KN file and find the audio track of the voice over. Open it in QT Pro. You can copy that track and paste it into the movie file and you should be all set. I tried it with a test file and it seems to work fine.

The audio track also has 0 seconds duration.  At first I was using Record Slideshow with an older presentation that has been upgraded through various versions of KN. As a test, I created a new one from scratch and tested it. Same results. Seems others are doing this successfully. 

Also, export for Youtube, QT, and iPod all behave similarly. Is there perhaps something in my preferences that is causing the trouble?
