I suspect you need to have the package option turned OFF in K 09 for
this to work right, which makes sense since packages get all hosed up
in transit if you don't zip them first.

I did that first. The only option that looked promising was the
copyright one, and that requires me to MAIL a letter to blogspot. I
think I might contact yahoo first instead.

Sorry, I know who you are Brian - I meant Bill Maher. I only found
that site when I Googled for "Bill Meaher"

It's probably not all that hard to take incoming emails and then use a
script to post them to WordPress. Certainly, my message asking about
the blog was there in seconds so it must be scripted somehow.

it. Maybe someone learned how to pull an RSS feed. Sorry that you
don't know who I am, I run Keynoteuser.com and I started this group a
long time ago.

I have never seen that blogspot page in my life and certainly didn't
create it.

Anyway, if any of you want to get to know me, just ask, there's no
need to google me :)

I just got those apps Les, Very cool and useful.

Two other thoughts. Vimeo offers higher-res videos than YouTube and is also supported by Web2Delight.

versiontracker.com to locate such apps.

Personally, I have used TubeTV in the past, but at Macworld I located
a new Indian company with two apps to its credit: Web2 Delight with
easy YouTube (and several other movie and pic sites) download and
conversion features; and Voila, a screenshot app with some very nice
image manipulation abilities which fits nicely into my workflow and
slide creation style.

May I suggest you take a look at the website and if they appeal, spend
a little time downloading the trial apps, and playing. The apps are
very Mac-like in look and feel.

Les great job! I did a presentation at a medical conference in Orlando
Fl last year and had a similar experiance..... About keynote not
religion. I am now sitting at an airport waiting on a delayed plane so
that I can to present at another conference. This one is on
presentation design. I was going to tell them up front I was using
keynote but now I may hold off. Ha ha

I may have answered my own question.
I never noticed in Inspector/Document that I could choose file size for 1280 X 720
My presentation has been built with 720X540 slide size
In changing the slide size to 1280 X 720, KN is not able to recreate the exact presentation.
But with some work in fixing the slides, I will now be able to create a QT file that will show in HD online, which is better than people having to download a 150 med QT file!

[applekeynote] Formating a QuickTime file for HD

I am about to upload a presentation on Vimeo.com, which accommodates Hi Definition.
Vimeo recommends "using the H.264 codec at size 1280×720, bit rate 3000-5000 kbits/sec (optimized for "download"), key frame every 30 frames (frame reordering on), using whatever frame rate you shot in."
Question. When I export my KN file to QuickTime, if I set the resolution to 1280 (X 960, to maintain proportions), the QuickTime file that gets created augments the size of the overall video frame but not of the images in the presentation.
Any idea how to create a QT file larger than 1024X768 through the "export" function?

[applekeynote] K 05 crashing unexpectedly

Hi:
I am experiencing unanticipated (daily) crashes in K 05, far more
frequently than with any of the previous versions, in presentations
that are clean, have run fine on several of the prior versions,
etc. but am not seeing any pattern in these crashes (just
downloaded the ppt patch and perhaps that includes some other fixes).
Just curious if anyone else has noticed an increase, or any patterns.
Just a few minutes ago, I was moving an image into better alignment,
and my Macbook suddenly rebooted. I routinely run all maintenance, I
run cache cleaners, etc., and have no reason to assume that it has
anything to do with the OS. All other programs behave normally. Yet,
Keynote will suddenly quit, and I will lose half an hour of work -
Yep, I am saving more frequently - but am trying to prevent the
crashing - This has also happened while presenting. I do not use any
'strange' themes, and am at a loss - any comments / suggestions are
very welcome. Martin Land

Most of the images are in the 200 to 300 kB range with a few in the 300 to 400 range and one or two approaching a mB.

I see this everywhere and to me it is obvious but to others, to my amazement, it doesn't at all and they can't see it.)

I’m completely behind you on that Juan. I photographed a number of images for a symposium and because each image was of activities, almost every image had to be cropped to obtain the best balance. Most of the images were sent off to our publication for printing and I also sent off that bunch (and more) to the guy who does the web site.

What can I say, he likes things in “nice neat rows.” So, he took some damn Windows template of “standard” landscape ratio and placed each of my images into these rectangles so they formed some nice neat rows and columns. He didn’t seem to mind in any way, shape, or form that EVERY image was distorted. I told him I’d be glad to redo the entire page with all of the images so that he didn’t have to do it but he refused. I offered to do a web gallery but he refused that as well. Our final compromise was to remove all of my images from the web site.

What a pathetic pity.

As far as size, the (storage) size of any given image can vary depending upon the number of contrast regions in the image and the degree of sharpening on the image. That is, an image of a flat wall will be significantly smaller than an image of grass. Sharpen (unsharp mask) the grassy image and the image will be yet larger in storage size. [Note: I’m making a distinction between the Storage size of an image versus the Dimension size of an image. Unfortunately in English we use the term “size” for both so I try to make a full distinction between the two.]

Now, let’s say you have an image who’s dimension size is 3504 x 2336 pixels and you resize it to 2000 x 1333 pixels, and let’s say you’ve save it with 50% compression to make it about 200 KB in storage size. If you went back to the original 3504 x 2336 image and did the resizing again to 1000 x 667, did the same level of JPEG compression, your image would now be about 50 KB. In other words, halving the size of an image reduces the size of the image to one forth.

[The reason why I had to go back to the original size is because when you JPEG a JPEG, the numbers will probably turn out different due to the lossy nature of JPEGs. It gets messy.]

When I’m saving images for Keynote, I ususally use PNG-24 for images and PNG-8 for flat (non-photographic) graphics because there are no JPEG degredation with PNGs. The sizes are often quite a bit larger, but to my eye, worth it. It’s either PNGs or TIFFs but they are a lot larger. (On the other hand, some of the projectors I’ve had to use made that level of concern irrelevant. Alas, I am not in a position to purchase my own projector.) Since the width of any keynote slide will be smaller than 1024 pixels wide, I usually save my images no larger than necessary for the space on the slide. If the image will cover half the slide, than my image will be no wider than around 500 pixels wide. If the image is going to be about 1/4 the width, than I’ll save it no more than around 250 pixels wide. You will not get any better appearance by placing full sized images into Keynote and will probably bog down the computer when it try to process the full sized image. You will probably get a better looking image by processing the image to the size you need yourself because you will be able to fine-tune that image as you need/want.

Once I’ve resized an image I will examine the image to see if I need to do any lightening (downsampling an image often makes it a tad darker), and then I’ll do any sharpening on the image as needed. Than I do a Save for Web, save as a PNG, and then I’m good. (Always the LAST thing when processing the image is to sharpen.)

BTW, doing a Save as... In Photoshop will give you a larger storage size image than if you do a Save for web. This is because the Save as... leaves a lot of metadata “stuff” contained in the images package that is not placed there for Save for web... Since I do not need the metadata for a keynote presentation, I do not save it that way.

Simply put, the more you process the image before Keynote gets it, the less Keynote will have to process the image--and all of the other things you are having Keynote do.

I have had great interest in file sizes over the years, as we have visited the image size topic from time to time. Brian and Les are right on the money. You do not need 300 dpi, but then - should you wish to shrink files - you need to maintain multiple file sizes of the original image creating a filing issue in iPhoto, or whatever you use. By contrast, projector incompatibilities have probably caused me more grief over the years than anything else.

A few years ago I pretty much quit shrinking jpeg files, or size the originals to 1024 x 768 at 300 dpi, ensuring availability of a decent quality original image (Exception: huge Tiffs > 5-10 MB).

I routinely present 250 - 350 MB (or larger) files from a 2003 old G4 w 1 Gig, and from a two year old MacBook Intel w 1 Gig, and have seen slide transition delays delays perhaps once in a five year period of intensive presenting. The exception seems to be the use of some of the new smart builds: I DO see delays when using something such as the "spinning caroussel thing" loaded with ten or twelve larger images, This implies that there is a limit to the number of MB's on a single slide - in part likely controlled by processor speed, available RAM etc. Until I started using some of these smart builds occasionally, I was under the impression that Keynote could handle almost anything on a single slide because I understood that it only retains two slides in memory: the one on the screen, and the next slide. Yet, when embedding a videoclip (some can be huge) there is no appreciable delay - so that has to trigger a hyperlink, rather than load the entire file as part of the slide transition. When Keynote has to reconfigure/resize any image (esp. video), you will lose some resolution.

Agreed. My presentations are nearly all photos. I've had pretty good luck letting KN do it, but you have more control if you do it outside KN. Also, if the images are TIF files, they are still pretty big when imported and can bloat the presentation.

Your best bet is to play with the resolutions and see if you can detect any loss of quality when used with a data projector.

I doubt that a serious reduction in resolution resulting in much smaller files will be noticeable.

your slide is a set resolution (same res as your projector) anything
MORE than the set amount of pixels of your slide is useless. as Juan
said, this is NOT print. there's not even dpi. There's just pixels. if
your preso is 1024x768 and you're filling half a slide, that's not a
lot of pixels. Set your image to 72 dpi (just a good rule of thumb,
and Keynote plays nice with that number) and then just forget it and
go by sheer pixels in your image. Width and height in pixels is all
you need to deal with. I'd even go as far as saying, scaling it in
Photoshop to the final slide size will likely look better than letting
Keynote do it.

Then after restarting, we checked off all of the top four generic repairs in the Maintain (first) tab (Permissions, Maintenance, Prebindings, and Log Archives). After these were complete, we had to restart his computer again.

After the restart, his problem was solved.

In short, we often neglect general maintenance of our computers until they force us to. Whether this will solve your problem or not I cannot guarantee. However, it's a good place to start.

There are other generic maintenance repair programs for the Mac, Onyx is free, Leopard Cache Cleaner is about $9 and can do other things. Either way it's your call. I first used LCC when I was REALLY REALLY up a wall, ran it in demo mode and purchased a license because it saved my butt.

I'd like to test it for myself as I got some warnings during export and will need to reformat some pages. Also, because I use a lot of images, the file is 200MB, so too big to email.

I'll have to sort this out later. Have a backup in QT and as PDF, so in a pinch should be okay.

Ken Drake on his blog did a nice write up of the BoF at Macworld.

As I've been unofficially invited to return to Macworld in '10, I will endeavour to get another one going with a little more heads up time.

There was no videoing of my two day session, but I intend to put up on my blog some highlights of what I did, especially as it relates to new features of KN 5.

I pulled a very late nighter on that first day, as I had obtained KN 5 and was playing with it and iwork.com to see what I could include in day 2 without losing the flow.

It wasn't helped by a dying logic board on my Macbook Pro causing sudden shutdowns when under load. It finally died yesterday, and my local supplier, ConnectingPoint, replaced in overnight. This is now the third logic board residing in the 'book. I'm informed that one more incident will see a new Macbook Pro replace the current one.

My blog post will be about my macworld experience, upshifting from a 75" pres. in 2008, to two full days in 2009. And I'll include some material I used. I tried not to use 2008 material, but when I discovered only 3 of 75 had attended or knew of it, I did some quick shifts to include some of the older material, which of course was seen as fresh by the group attending.

In my mind, when something like this happens I can only assume that something snarky has happened to my computer. Just as a coincidence, an office mate of mine came to me an hour ago with the problem that he couldn’t save a document from Word: he was getting a message that there was no room on the HD to place the file (112 GB wasn’t enough space??)

We downloaded Leopard Cache Cleaner (from versiontracker.com) and ran it in demo mode. We went over to the last tab and did a Medium cleaning of all three caches (Local, System, and Users). Then after restarting, we checked off all of the top four generic repairs in the Maintain (first) tab (Permissions, Maintenance, Prebindings, and Log Archives). After these were complete, we had to restart his computer again.

After the restart, his problem was solved.

In short, we often neglect general maintenance of our computers until they force us to. Whether this will solve your problem or not I cannot guarantee. However, it’s a good place to start.

There are other generic maintenance repair programs for the Mac, Onyx is free, Leopard Cache Cleaner is about $9 and can do other things. Either way it’s your call. I first used LCC when I was REALLY REALLY up a wall, ran it in demo mode and purchased a license because it saved my butt.

You should look at Art Text 2 or Text-Osterone (I didn't come up with that name). They are a lot less expensive than Motion.

[applekeynote] Update embedded webpage

Does anyone know if, and how, Keynote might be able to update a
webpage that has been embedded on a slide DURING a presentation?

I'm aware that '06 will only grab it when you start the presentation,
but I was wondering if any of the newer versions can do it mid-play?

I use Keynote for a weekly trivia quiz and we keep score using Google
Docs ( we run it in multiple cities simultaneously). I'd love to be
able to have a slide periodically in the presentation/quiz that shows
the scores as we progress. Google Docs provides an easy 'publish as
webpage' option, but I need Keynote to get a fresh version of that
page during the presentation/quiz. Is my only option really to stop
the presentation and restart it?

If there is another way of doing this, I'm open to that as well...

[applekeynote] Video hangs when I place in in Keynote 08 and 09

I've got a video clip which plays fine in Quicktime, outside of Keynote. When I place it in
Keynote (both 08 and 09), it has a problem a couple of seconds from the end of the clip: it
hangs on a frame, but the audio plays fine, then the video skips to where it should be, then
hangs again. I've tried it with several different clips.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Not Automator, but the Keyboard & Mouse control panel. Open System
prefs, and find it.

Next, click on the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab across the top of that pref pane.

Next, click on the little plus sign below the big list.

Next, Choose "Other" from the Application popup menu, and find
Keynote. It probably won't show up on the list, unless you've removed
it from it's iWork folder. Once chosen, type tne name of the menu item
into the "Menu Title" box. eg. "Navigator" or "Light Table"

Next, choose a keyboard shortcut. I'm partial to using the "Ctrl" key
(Control key) due to the fact that it's not commonly used alone on the
Mac, and it helps me keep my personal keyboard shortcuts separate and
memorable.

Repeat the process for every item you want to quickly access.... Why
not all of them? ;-)

I hope this helps. Oh, you will probably need to quit and relaunch
Keynote for the new keyboard shortcuts to take effect. I just did some
in Safari, and had to quit it for them to "take."

You should be able to break the slide into two slides with scale, magic move, as the transition between them. You wouldn't need to create an animation for the scaled object. The magic move would scale the object for you.

What has worked for me - as a work around - is to go back to the original file (the one I am scaling up), and then at the end of the scaling action build, have an automatic transition to a new slide with a larger version of the scaled-up image. ÊI know it isn't perfectly clean, but it was the best thing I could come up with. If you have something else building in at the time of the transition, you can use that to distract the observer, and by the time their eye gets back to your enlarged image, it is in sharp focus. A disadvantage is that it takes a bit of work to precisely position the (second) image - that should be easier w K 09, haven't tried it in K 09 yet.

Could my problem stem from too slow of a processor and not enough memory?

Any suggestions besides trimming the lard in iMovie?

I'm the one that started this mess, and several posters seem to not
read my posts. I thought you were trying to upscale using the Scale
action. Magic Move fixes this, that's all.

Not sure I understand - the problem I encountered is that as you scale up, the image becomes fuzzy - You scale up WITHIN A SLIDE - so how would Magic Move solve the fuzziness issue?

What has worked for me - as a work around - is to go back to the original file (the one I am scaling up), and then at the end of the scaling action build, have an automatic transition to a new slide with a larger version of the scaled-up image. ÊI know it isn't perfectly clean, but it was the best thing I could come up with. If you have something else building in at the time of the transition, you can use that to distract the observer, and by the time their eye gets back to your enlarged image, it is in sharp focus. A disadvantage is that it takes a bit of work to precisely position the (second) image - that should be easier w K 09, haven't tried it in K 09 yet.

[applekeynote] Slow transitions

I just finished a long presentation in Keynote '08.
It's 20 slides and 70 meg
Lots of graphics and a fair amount of animations including flip and rotate.
I am working on an older iMac with 800MHz PowerPC G4 and 768 MB SDRAM.
I am running OS X version 10.4.11
I use Keynote version 4.0.3

Everything works well except that the transitions are very slow.
After exporting the presentation into QuickTime (CD-Rom-movie Medium), the transitions are even slower.

I need to make a QuickTime movie out of this presentation .

Could my problem stem from too slow of a processor and not enough memory?

Any suggestions besides trimming the lard in iMovie?

see my correction. I thought he was talking about using the Scale
action, not simply scaling it by hand. The scale action is crap if you
go UP in size, even if you downsized your image to start with.

I should correct this and say, if you're using the scale ACTION to do
this, it gets blurry. If you're simply making an image 150% of your
original full sized image, then there's no way around that (see Gary's
email)

Hi,

I haven’t picked up ‘09 yet, so I do not know “how” blurry you are seeing, but anytime you upscale an image, there’s going to be some level of blurring. Increasing the size of an image, even in Photoshop, has varying degrees of success and the greater the up-scaling, the greater the blurring is going to be. In addition, the smaller the size of the original image, the greater the blurring will be even if doing the same percentage on the same image. That is, if you have the same image at 2000 pixels across and at 200 pixels apart and you expand them to 3000 and 300 respectively, the smaller will display much greater blurring.

Hmm, I just saw Brian saying that there is some bug in iWork. There may be, but again, I do not know how much blurryness you are seeing and I do not how much of that is iWork and how much of that is optic physics.

Remember, what you see on CSI is NOT POSSIBLE. When the computer guy takes an image from a surveillance camera, taps a few keys on the computer and blows up the image so you can see the license plate on the car across the street. It’s great TV, but it’s lousy optic science. [Note: despite my chuckles at this, I do enjoy CSI and watch it each week.]

There are plugin software solutions for this such as Blowup (by Alien Software) and Genuine Fractals (by OnOne software). What these products do is to find the edges within the image, turn them into vectors so the edges do not pixelate when the image is enlarged and then rasterizes the vectors at the end of the process. Unfortunately this often leads to lack of artifacts in those regions that tend to make the image look rather plastic-like. In the past couple of years the software companies have introduced noise artifacts in the image to limit this and the results are getting better.

Downscaling is always going to be successful (some of the possible side effects tend to be a slight darkening of the image, but that’s about it).

Ergo, the best solution to upscaling is to not do it in the first place. See if you can find an image that is larger than you need and decrease it in size.

I hate to be a spoil-sport here, but your question is excellent and is one of the most often asked questions when I do any Photoshop seminar (other than “why do my printed images not look like they do on the screen?”)

[applekeynote] hot keys?

I am working on a presentation and find myself moving from light table to navigator view
constantly. I looked in the view menu and noticed that there is no short cut keys to switch
views. Does anyone know of a fast way to switch views? Will an automator action help here?

If you are talking about an image that has been imported to KN that you want to enlarge, it's possible that the resolution is being reduced upon import. In prefs, check Genera tab and make sure the box for Reduce Placed Images... is unchecked. But only if you want to enlarge after importing. If you leave it unchecked, full size images are used which can really bloat your file size.

To check this, right click the KN file and Check Package Contents. You can compare the file size of the imported photo vs. the original.

yes, you have to save the first one, then move it and save the second
one with the SAME NAME as the first. Then after the name on each (but
before the .kth) add "_10x7" and "8x6" although you can just not do
the 8x6 and Keynote will resize to that one if you choose it (though
it might not look exactly like the REAL 800x600 version).

[applekeynote] Keynote 09 - Can't open new document (Update)

A little more investigation has revealed a problem with some older
themes (specifically, Sandstone and Leather Book). I removed these
from their themes folder and all is now right with the (Keynote) world.

I was never very fond of leather book, so I permanently deleted that,
but I used the "save as new theme" method of salvaging Sandstone and
that worked fine.

If anyone has already responded to this (I get Keynote Group in digest
form), my apologies. I panicked. ;-)

[applekeynote] Keynote 09 - Can't open new document

Good evening, all.

Well, I've been using Pages 09 and Numbers 09 with great success and
enthusiasm. Unfortunately, I have encountered a rather significant
problem with the application I am likely to use most -- Keynote.

Keynote 09 launches properly, but doesn't display the theme chooser.
When I use the "New" or "New from Chooser" menu command, the program
crashes with the message, "An unexpected error has occurred.Please
quit and reopen Keynote." Making it even more strange is the fact that
I can open an existing presentation without any problem. It's only
when I try to create a new one that the problem occurs.

I'm thinking this might be a plist issue, but thought I'd get advice
from the group first. Has anybody had a similar problem?

Just FYI, I still have all my previous versions of Keynote installed.
'08 is still working properly. I'm using a P-book G4, 1.67mhz with 1GB
of RAM.

Any suggestions or insights would be most welcome!

Greeting everyone!
I am a new member and have been creating a project presentation in Keynote '08 version 4.0.22
I am working on an old G4 iMac with an 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processor and 768 MB SDRAM, using OS X Version 10.4.11
Many slides are heavy in graphics and some animations (flip, pop and some rotate).
Even though my slide transitions are set on automatic, with no delay, some transitions are very slow (whether I use "no transition" or "fade through color").
The transitions are even slower after the file is exported it into QuickTime.
The presentation is currently 20 slides and 85Meg. I intend to make it a QuickTime movie to raise funds for the project.
Is my problem due to a slow processor/not enough Ram?

Yes, it's an old location but every new Keynote version seems to look for themes there.

Root around before deleting!
