[Apple iPod] iPod Battery and speakers

I have begun to use my iPod 80Classic in the office. I have a desktop
speaker by Altec Lansing that powers the iPOd as it plays. I am
concerned that the iPOD's battery will not discharge and therefore
will not fully recharge when not in the speakers. Am I misinformed in
thinking that the battery needs to be dischaged every so often?
