Hello Jules,

The two products I mentioned in my message of 25th May were the Apple
Radio Remote <http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MA070G/D> and the
BluEye from Gear4 (this one you've just asked about...)

I have the BluEye because I have a Bluetooth mobile phone. I love it
to bits — whenever my phone rings, the podcast or whatever I'm
listening to shuts up, and I can simply press the Play/Pause button to
answer (sometmes I have to press 2 or 3 times). Despite its minuscule
size, the microphone actually gives better sound than the phone itself
in most circumstances. And being able to hear the person through the
Apple earbuds (with Griffin EarJam boosters) is a real pleasure — the
EarJams cut out ambient sound and mean a lot less "Speak up! Didn't
catch that!". In most places, the radio reception is excellent too.
I have only two criticisms of the BluEye: first, the cable that links
it to the iPod is quite delicate, though when mine gave up the ghost
after 4 months, Gear4 replaced it without quibble, and the successor
has so far done about 8 months. Secondly, the clip that holds the unit
to your lapel, collar etc. tends to slip. Arranging the wires
carefully helps here, but it is a bit of a nuisance sometimes.

My wife, on the other hand, has the Apple Radio Remote. She never
walks around with earphones in anyway, as she is blind and navigates
with the help of a guide dog and her ears! Besides, her phone is not
Bluetooth. The FM signal is fairly poor here in our village, but
that's no surprise—it's poor even with a beefy tuner on our stereo.
Our village is surrounded by higher ground, which masks many FM
signals. In Paris, on the other hand, it gives excellent clear
reception. In both units, the design of course uses the earbud wire as
an antenna, which helps reception no end.
As I mentioned earlier, the Apple Radio Remote has a much better lapel
clip. I can't comment on the connecting cable, except to say that it
hasn't given up yet after 2 months!

But the decision and the choice are both up to you, of course!

HTH

Archie
