[Apple iPod] 5g ipod buttons don't work reset

Hi:
I guess this is going to be a ipodgeek question. This is a basket-case ipod. Once 'click-
of-death', no light on display, battery wouldn't charge, but now those work after a hard
drive swap and lots of pico-flex repairs. http://www.harryhydro.com/tech/ipod.html
I 'restored' it on this Mac, but still, I can't select anything. It's sitting on 'English' as a new
update would leave it. However, I CAN 'reset' it with the menu and select combo. Neither
button by itself will reset it, ruling out a stuck button. Shouldn't the center button select
"English" and advance me to the next menu? Also, none of the buttons will re-light the
display after it goes dark after a few seconds. Sliding the hold does light the display, and
toggles a little 'lock icon' on the screen. That's the only thing that does light the display.
Again, though, I can hold select + menu and reset the ipod.
Could it be this hard drive isn't exactly the right firmware? With iTunes, it does report the
right serial number...
Any help/clues appreciated!
Harry
