Even watching out for invisible trailing spaces which are usually the reason for multiple artist entries in my collection.
Set iTunes to Browse (click the eye in the lower right and scan the the list for dups. Before I knew that feature existed I would complain loudly about how iTunes sucked I have pretty much learned to suspect the user first when a program won't do something that by all rights--it should. In iTunes you won't notice the doubles except when the track sort won't work right. Used to drive me up a wall when the doubles showed up on the iPod. I would try to remember which ones did thatI slowly learned most of its secrets.
Sometimes though the reason they won't behave like the same album baffles me. Different bit rates? doesn't always matter--same with file types. Nor does different artwork force the tunes into separate listings. If recalcitrant ones bug you enough then re-import them.
