Many hours? Really? A little while ago I went through all my iTunes songs
and changed, e.g.
Bob Dylan to Dylan, Bob
Neil Young to Young, Neil
Warren Zevon to Zevon, Warren.
It took me perhaps 30 minutes to go through 3,000+ songs.

Search on the artist. Highlight the tracks and right-click > Get Info. Edit
the artist entries. OK that.

Repeat for each artist.

Do you actually have duplicate files or just duplicate entries in iTunes?
What shows in your file system (Windows Explorer/Mac Finder)?
