[Apple iPod] Backup files

I backed up my iTunes folder to a shared harddrive on my home network. I am using Windows XP on all machines in the house. I now have a new laptop and thought I would use iTunes on it in another part of the house. When I tried to load the iTunes files, a message came up that the iTunes library on that hard drive was not an exported iTunes file and could not be loaded onto the laptop. I had to "add a folder" to the laptop, the folder was the backup iTunes folder. Question, how come the laptop iTunes would (could) not access the saved iTunes library? What is the use in saving manually the iTunes library if it cannot be used?

Hank
